Phase 1 of this maddening celebration frenzy is over. And if I may say so myself I did quite a good job :) I still have to run some errands today for phase 2 which is tomorrow, but I'm confident things will be calm down a bit after that. Maybe even enough to write a chapter or two? Who knows?
Meanwhile I give you this little piece of fluff. I must admit I'm quite fond of it. I remember that I woke up one night and had this in my head so I walked over to my computer and typed it all in. Went back to sleep and found it in the morning. Made my day :)
Lead the Way - 093 - Rules
As the credits rolled over the screen JJ looked down at the woman in her arms. Emily’s eyes were dropping and she was tired too. It was well past midnight and neither of them had wanted to stop after the first movie.
JJ had invited Emily over for a casual movie night. It was meant as a gesture to relax the situation and it had worked. Of course the profiler looked just as irresistible in a washed out jean and a red shirt as a black dress, but JJ tried very hard not to see that.
She had prepared the snacks and put Henry to sleep before Emily arrived with the movies. She had brought almost a dozen DVDs to make sure there was something JJ would like. Always prepared, this one.
Her selection had included Casablanca, The Godfather, Star Wars - which she tried to hide quickly - Carmen and a few chosen lesbian interest movies. Still being new to this side of love JJ had jumped on the opportunity to find out more.
They had ended up watching ‘Imagine Me and You’ followed by ‘I can’t think straight’. The latter had touched a cord in JJ. She could relate to both characters and she was on the edge of her seat the entire time.
During the sex scene Emily had shifted away a little, but that had only prompted her to put an arm around the profiler. She could smell her hair as she held her tight. Remembering the scent of her shampoo and the image of her getting out of the shower JJ had almost forgotten to pay attention to the movie.
Now it was time to go to sleep.
“You’re staying, right?” JJ asked more out of habit than actual uncertainty.
“If your couch will have me. I’m too tired to drive.”
“Oh, you’re not sleeping on the couch.”
“I’m not?” Emily looked at her, smiling broadly.
“Not tonight.” JJ smiled back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
JJ gave her one of her Redskins Fan Shirts. This one had the number 86 on it. Fred Davis was one of the team’s best players and one of JJ’s favourites. When Emily stepped out of the bathroom she kept fidgeting with the hem line. JJ’s heart skipped a beat at this endearing nervousness.
She went over and took Emily’s hand into her own, guiding her to the bed. Neither of them were ready to make the first move. They kissed for a while and both felt it would be enough for tonight. They hugged each other close and took comfort in knowing that they would still be there in the morning.
It was JJ who broke away from the kiss to ask:
“Emily, can I tell you something?“
She opened her eyes to look at her angel and said: “Anything you want.“
“But don’t laugh at me, okay?“
Emily smiled. “Never crossed my mind.“
There was a moment of silence before JJ spoke again.
“I don’t know how to be in a relationship with a woman.“
Feeling that this was taking a serious turn Emily said honestly:
“And I don’t know how to be in a relationship. But we can learn together.“ JJ looked at her in surprise. “We’ll just go with what feels right for us.“
JJ thought about this for a moment. If Emily was right, it would be divine. Making up your own game plan had something extremely enticing. Regardless, she didn’t want to fall back into old habits. Never would she be willing to go back.
“Maybe we could agree on a few rules.“
“Like what?“ Emily’s back tensed.
“I mean, like never going to bed angry.“
“Agreed.“ This she could live with.
“Your turn.”
“Okay.” She kissed JJ. “How about: Not discussing work while we’re off the clock.”
“Deal!” She kissed her back. “No horror movies. Ever!”
“Well that’s a given!” Emily laughed. “No laughing at anything geeky I say.”
“Are you kidding? That’s part of why I like you so much.”
“It is?” Instead of an answer JJ pulled her into a deep kiss.
“No one else?” JJs voice was no more than a whisper.
“There may be a lot of things I don’t know about relationships but even I know about faithfulness.” When JJ’s eyes still showed doubt she went on: “I realize now that it’s you JJ. It’s always been you. Denying that would be denying myself.”
She brushed away a tear with her thumb. JJ was so vulnerable behind her tough shell. She would never allow herself to forget that. To lighten the mood she said:
“No alarms on Sunday.”
“I think Henry will take care of that.” Emily laughed. Of course he would see to it that they never got a chance to sleep in.
“I’m not in love with Will.”
“I know.”
“I just wanted to say it.” Emily kissed her gently.
“No using up all the hot water before I had a chance to shower.”
“You could join me,” JJ said with a smirk.
“Aren’t we getting a little ahead of ourselves?”
“Oh, I know you.”
“You take that back!” She pushed JJ back onto the pillows by her wrists, straddling her.
“I’m not some kind of sex machine.”
“Oh yes you are.” JJ searched for her lips once more, but Emily pulled back playfully.
“Unlike you, America’s sweetheart?”
“I certainly look the part.” JJ enjoyed the teasing.
“Until I kiss you right here.” She leaned in to lick JJ’s neck and just as she had anticipated Jennifer moaned.
“Not fair.”
“Since when do I play fair?”
“Right.” JJ conceded, searching for Emily’s lips again. This time she complied. JJ turned Emily over, now lying on top of her.
“One more thing.”
“Mhm?”
“Say what you mean.“ JJ had stopped smiling.
“Always?“
“Well, I mean, when I get too close or when you feel like you need some time to yourself.“
“Thank you.“ Emily whispered.
“For what?“
“Allowing me that.“
“Emily, I just want you to be yourself.“
The profiler fell silent. That was easier said than done. JJ felt the other woman stiffen underneath her and she added:
“I know trust is earned…”
“I trust you.” Emily said quickly.
“Do you trust me not to leave you?”
“Do you trust me not to mess it up again?”
“I know you won’t.”
“How? How do you know that?”
“Because you’re smart. You won’t make the same mistake twice.”
“What if you’ll find you won’t like who I really am?”
“Emily?”
“Yes?”
JJ leaned down and kissed her again. She tried to put as much emotion into the kiss as she felt in her heart. She felt tears escape her lover’s eyes and let herself off of her. She hugged her tight until Emily spoke again.
“I have flaws.”
“We all do.”
“I can’t expect you to accept all of them.”
“And maybe I won’t, but what I like will outweigh that.”
Emily pondered that for a while.
JJ asked again: “So do you trust me not to leave you?”
“I won’t lie. I won’t hide. I won’t pretend to be someone I’m not.”
“Promise me you won’t hold back.”
“I promise.” And with that JJ had finally gotten something she’d lost a long time ago: her trust in Emily.
