Lead the Way - 005 - Late Night Visit
Once more, the hand dropped to her side. What if she wasn’t home? What if she had someone over? What if she didn’t want company? What if she was still sleeping? It was impossible to say how long she had been standing there, but suddenly the door swung open. It took her a couple of seconds before realizing she never rung the bell.
“Do you like my hallway?” It was supposed to sound chipper but it came out aggressive. Emily bit her lip.
“I was just… um…”
“The pizza is running late, I was checking up on it about ten minutes ago.” So she had been here ten minutes. Interesting. It hadn’t felt like ten minutes. But why hadn’t she just opened the door then?
“Oh, well, if you have plans, I’ll leave you to your lunch.”
“JJ why are you here?”
“I wanted to apologize and see how you were.”
“Apologize? For what?” Before the other agent could answer a young girl interrupted them bearing two hot, delicious smelling pizzas. The brunette paid her, barely noticing how cute delivery girls could be.
She turned away from the hallway and walked into her apartment, leaving the door open. When she didn’t hear footsteps she went to look after the blonde. She was gone. Stepping back out into the hallway she saw Agent Jareau waiting for the elevator.
JJ had noticed that Emily had ordered two pizzas and felt very stupid.
“What are you doing? Come inside.” Feeling confused and guilty she followed the other woman into her apartment.
“Do you want some?” Maybe if they talked about something innocent she could read JJ better. They had agreed on not profiling each other, but Emily was a cheater.
“No thank you. I didn’t come to steal your food.” Oddly enough JJ refused chitchat and wanted to get straight to the point.
“Right. You came to apologize, although I have no idea what for. Do you want something to drink?”
“Yes, please. Just water.” Although her body screamed for something stronger, she knew better. JJ noticed that Emily had put the pizzas in the oven and taken out two glasses. She motioned her over to the couch in her living room.
“I am sorry for showing up like this.” JJ started “I really had to do this in person. Everything went wrong in Colorado because I didn’t do my job and I wanted you to know how sorry I am. I…”
“What are you talking about?”
“If I had done my job that reporter wouldn’t have blabbed about you being an FBI agent. Cyrus might never have found out.”
“So he would have thought one of us was possessed by Satan. There is no reasoning with people like him, you know that.” JJ didn’t seem convinced and Emily continued. “Besides, it was my choice to say I was the agent. He had no way of knowing if it was Reid or me, but I decided to tell him. You had no part in that.”
“If…”
“If he hadn’t said anything… If they hadn’t watched that particular channel… If we had never received that 911 call… If the world was a place where bad things don’t happen to people who don’t deserve it…” And in her head she added: ‘If you weren’t straight…’
“Really JJ, don’t worry about it. After this weekend I’ll be fine.”
JJ sat up unsure what she should say next, how she could possibly confess all the fear and panic she had felt at the thought of never seeing her again, when a tall, dark and very gorgeous woman walked into Agent Prentiss’ living room. JJ’s heart stopped as she recognized the clothes on this woman to be Emily’s.
Hastily she put her glass down and without looking at the brunette she said:
“Well, that’s really all I came to say. Have a nice weekend. See you Monday.” And before the other Agent could respond she was already out of the door.
