58. A Shocking Discovery
The date goes remarkably well if Merlin has anything to say.
Arthur took her to one of her favorite restaurants and they spent the night talking and joking and battering just as they usually do. The only difference was that Arthur seemed unable to stop touching her.
He would squeeze her hand across the table; touch her arm; bump his foot against hers… always seeking for some sort of physical contact between them.
At first, Merlin was a little apprehensive about it and would gaze around every time Arthur touched her. But her fears were definitely unfounded. No one sent them a second glan. Maybe she had been a little paranoiac.
At the end of the evening, Arthur guides them to the doors when Merlin suddenly stops, a sheepish look in her face. He looks at her questioning.
“I forgot my scarf.” She says and he rolls his eyes.
“Really Merlin, if your head wasn’t attached to your neck…” He huffs annoyed. “Go ahead. I’ll wait here.”
She smiles brightly at him before rushing back to their table, but she didn’t need to go far. A waiter was already coming to meet her with the accessory in hand.
“Thanks!” Merlin says, before returning to Arthur’s side. “We can go now.”
She says to him, but he’s not paying attention. His eyes are glued forward, stunned. Merlin follows his gaze and understands.
It’s Andrew sitting there and kissing…
“MOM?” She only realizes she said out loud when Andrew and Susan quickly turn to look at them, a mix of surprise and guilt on their faces.
“Merlin…” Susan says at the same time Andrew stands up.
“Arthur.” He pronounces softly, taking a step forward.
The boy backs away, a hard expression set of his face.
“Come on, Merlin.” Arthur says, grabbing Merlin’s hand and dragging her out of the restaurant.
