105. You Should Have Told Me

Owen is speaking something about their next game, Arthur knows is important, but somehow he seems unable to focus on it for more than a few words at time.

His dream became frequent now.  Every time Arthur closed his eyes, he would be back to the woods in a chainmail, following the strange man of whom he never saw the face.

Now things were becoming even more confusing; flashes of blue eyes and sharp cheekbones mixed themselves with swords and magic. His reality started to blend in with his strange dream. Arthur knew he was seeing Merlin, even though there was something different about the dream image of her.

“Earth to Arthur.” Owen calls, waving a hand in front of the blonde’s face, making him snap back to attention. “Did you hear a word of what I said?”

“To be honest, no.” Arthur shrugs, eyes searching and finding Merlin at her usual table across the cafeteria.

“What has got into you lately?” Penn asks with a touch of worry. “You’re all distracted and moody when you should be celebrating. You got into Princeton man! And, it’s your birthday.”

“Penn is right, you know?” Kay joins in. “You could at least smile. It’s not that hard, you got everything you want.”

Arthur looks around his friends, before sighing in resignation.

“I got accepted in Princeton, Merlin is going to Oxford. And I don’t like my birthday. I spent too many of them in the hospital with my mum.” The boys all flinch at the revelation.

“Dude, sorry.” Owen says apologetic and the others agree.

“You didn’t know.” Arthur shrugs and stands up. “Excuse me for a moment; I have to talk to Merlin.”

Arthur doesn’t manage one single step. It hits him like a shock wave, knocking him down on the floor; images of swords and shields, crowns and magic, castle and fields and in the end, Merlin. His head swirls for a second, full of new, old memories.

He blinks his eyes slowly, looking up the concerned faces of Owen and Penn.

“Dude, you’re okay?” The blonde nods and carefully pushes himself into an upright position. Merlin is standing a couple of feet behind, looking worried.

“I’m fine, just got dizzy for a moment, no need to worry.”

“You’re sure man?” Penn insists, still watching Arthur alarmed.

“Yes.” Arthur’s eyes don’t leave Merlin. “Can we talk in private?” He asks the girl and she just nods frowning in worry and confusion.

Arthur acknowledges her confirmation with a short nod of his own and stalks out of the cafeteria, ignoring the looks he was receiving and without looking back, he knew Merlin was following.

When they are out of hearing range from the rest of the school, Arthur turns to look at Merlin.

“Are you really okay, Arthur?” She asks carefully.

“Yes.” He replies dryly. “I’m suddenly aware that I used to be King Arthur of Camelot and you were Court Sorcerer, but otherwise, I’m fine.”

“Oh.” Merlin says dumbly, a little shocked.

“Oh? That’s all you have to say?” Arthur asks, seething. “You should have told me, Merlin!”

“I didn’t know how you would react! I didn’t know if you’d believe me!” Merlin replies defensively.

“You couldn’t possibly think I’d react worse than I’m reacting now! You know how much I hate secrets! I thought you learned your lesson about keeping things from me!”

Arthur paces back and forward while he speaks, unable to stand still; unable to look at Merlin. A deep feeling of betrayal is eating his inside. Merlin is just standing there, taking all, looking miserable.

“I’m sorry, Arthur.” She tries, taking a step towards him. Arthur backs off, shaking his head.

“You’re always sorry, Merlin, but you keep lying to me.”

“I didn’t lie; I just didn’t tell you the truth.”

“Same difference for me.” He sighs, looking away.

“I’m really sorry.” She tries again, ashamed.

“Yeah, so am I. We’re done, Merlin. For good.”

Her head shoots up in alarm. Merlin meets Arthur’s eyes and sees the regret running deeply inside his blue irises. He isn’t joking. He isn’t just saying.

“Arthur…” Merlin starts to protest, but he just shakes his head and walks away, leaving her broken where she is.
