111. Ghost of the Future
It’s the third time Arthur opens his eyes and finds himself in his hospital room. This time, he’s alone again. Morgana is gone.
With a deep, shuddering sigh, he lies down on the bed, staring unseeing at the white ceiling with Merlin’s words ringing on his ears and her pained face burned behind his eyelids.
He’s not sure how long he stays like that. At some point, he falls asleep and it’s brought back to conscientiousness when a small, delicate hand runs through his hair.
Arthur blinks dozily, staring at the familiar face. Blue eyes; dark hair; kind smile. He sits up quickly, shocked when the identity of his visitor finally registers in his sleep-fogged mind.
“Mum?” He asks, almost as if he’s afraid. She merely nods.
“Yes, sweetheart. It’s me.”
“You’re the Ghost of the Future.” It’s not a question, but Igraine nods again anyway. “You’re going to show me my future?”
“I’m supposed to show you the future that is in your heart. But only if you want to.”
Arthur looks at his mother for long moments, considering, before shaking his head.
“I know what I’ll see. I understand the point of all this now and I don’t want to spoil the surprise.” He smiles a little and Igraine replies with a smile of her own.
“If you’re sure.” Arthur nods.
“I’m sure.”
Igraine takes a step forward, opening her arms in invitation. Arthur closes the distance between them, hugging his mother tightly.
“I missed you so much.”
“I missed you too, my boy.” Igraine replies, voice muffled against Arthur’s shoulder. He’s so much taller now.
“I don’t want you to leave.” Arthur confesses, tone pained. His mother pulls back and holds his face in hands.
“Arthur, I’m not the one who has to leave.” He looks confused and Igraine just smiles. “You’re ready to go back, darling. Back home. Back to Merlin.”
Arthur looks away for a second, eyes rimmed with tears.
“Why can’t I have both of you?”
“Because that’s not how it was meant to be.” She smiles reassuring. “She’s your past, present and future. I’m merely a point in your history, Arthur, but Merlin… Merlin is your destiny. Two sides of the same coin. Remember that.” He nods his understanding and Igraine smiles.
I love you, mum.”
“I love you too, darling.” She smiles for the last time and stands on her tiptoes to press a kiss against his forehead.
When her lips make contact with his skin, Arthur feels the familiar jerky feeling and closes his eyes again.
