Why don't people talk to each other in elevators?

Here is a perfect opportunity to reach out to humanity (or at least a couple of small representatives thereof) and we don't do it.

When I talk to people in the elevator they look at me as if I'm nuts.

Maybe I am.

Friendly people in elevators make me happy. I try to at least acknowledge my elevator mates every morning, and every so often will encounter someone who is not averse to a friendly smile or a have a nice day. Whenever I do, I take full advantage.

If I ever say something to a friend while we are on an elevator that has other people in it, everyone always turns and stares at me for a second. Even if their back is facing me, they will twist and turn to investigate. It's pretty weird and annoying.

I guess people don't like talking in elevators because it's a confined space that breeches their comfort level. While in a box, you can't really escape or effectively ignore someone when they are right next to you.
