Books I want to read

Oct 13, 2010 09:38

I saw this at Sam's Club the other day & really should have bought it. It just looked so amusing!  And I love the way it pokes fun at the current vampire obsession.

Note the tagline? Some vampires are good. Some are evil. Some are faking it to get girls.

What's it about?
"Awkward and allergic to the sun, sixteen-year-old Finbar Frame never gets the girl. But when he notices that all the female students at his school are obsessed with a vampire romance novel called Bloodthirsty, Finbar decides to boldly go where no sane guy has gone before-he becomes a vampire, minus the whole blood sucking part. With his brooding nature and weirdly pale skin, it's surprisingly easy for Finbar to pretend to be paranormal. But, when he meets the one girl who just might like him for who he really is, he discovers that his life as a pseudo-vampire is more complicated than he expected. This hilarious debut novel is for anyone who believes that sometimes even nice guys-without sharp teeth or sparkly skin-- can get the girl."
:D I love it! I really enjoyed the tone of the blurbage on the back of the book - it's written in first person (which I normally hate but didn't even consciously notice here!) and had an ironic, laid-back feel that was whitty and fun.

And I found a giveaway! At La Femme Readers. Enter by Friday, the 15th for your chance to win a copy of the book, plus an iron-on badge.
And another giveaway at vampires.com. (I'm making competition for myself, here...)

Read an excerpt!

Another book I set my eyes on recently, and read the first few pages of, was ironically not even a YA - I'm not sure if my tastes being so open is a good or bad thing ;)

Anyway, we were at Borders (My favorite place on the planet, I think) and someone has to supervise Munchkin as she's not quite old enough to just turn loose in the children's section yet.  Plus, I really, really want her to grow up with an obsession love of books equal to what runs in my side of the family. (Seriously - our tradional father's day celebration consists of taking my Dad to CiCi's Pizza, playing a couple games of pool at this family center downtown, and then topping the evening off by closing out a bookstore.) So I'm always on the lookout for good quality books for her little library - even if she is only in kindergarten. And this just looked so stinking cute!!

"Elly Knottleweed-Eversprightly has a secret. A big secret. She is a fairy, and she even has the wings to prove it. Every time Elly goes to a new fairy school, it ends in disaster, but this week, Elly is going undercover at her friend Jess’s South Street School. Human school should be a piece of cake. No spells. No flying. Just normal human stuff. But Elly’s fairy blunders make her feel like she’s been living under a toadstool. Plus, there’s something fishy going on. All the girls are into fairies, and Elly smells magic. Is she really the only fairy at South Street School?"
I ended up reading the first few pages and it was just as cute inside as it looks from the outside. And very funny. Something I really look forward to reading with Munchkin when she gets a little older.  It's always a treasure when you find a book you can really enjoy reading to them, rather than wanting to pull your hair out. (our current favorite bedtime story is Wiggle by Dorren Cronin - very cute)

Apparently it's the 2nd in a series that currently consists of 3 books.  (I had no idea until I googled it just now looking for the cover)
