asorbic_acid was showing me her
steampunk costume today and I was inspired to doodle.
Since she was a child, Theda Barr had an unquenchable thirst for adventure. Unfortunately, her interests in marksmanship, fencing, and exploration were hardly considered proper for a young lady in the Victorian era. When she was 16 and still had not grown out of what her parents thought was a phase, they had her sent to finishing school in Paris as a last ditch effort to make a lady out of their impetuous daughter. However, she never made it to her destination. Posing as a boy under the name Theo Bara, she ran away and joined the Imperial British Army, where she got to live her dreams and explore the exotic lands of Africa, India, and the Far East. She boarded vast airships and secretive submarines, and rose up in the ranks under her assumed identity. Finally, she was ousted in her mid-twenties, when she was shot in the chest by a poacher in Nairobi. While no more harmful than a flesh-wound, it was a fatal hit for Theo, who died when the surgeon cut off the unconscious Theda's shirt and found a surprise or two underneath.
Though women were not officially allowed in the Army, her accomplishments could not go unnoticed, and she was allowed to keep her rank as Theda Barr.
LOL yes I'm a dork. I looked up the rank Corporal after I wrote it on there (which I did cuz it sounded cool) and turns out a Corporal is little more than a piece of shit. Also I took Theda's name (and Theo's too) from the silent film actress Theda Bara, who I've always been interested in and who was basically Hollywood's first sex symbol (not that that has anything to do with the character Theda Barr, I just thought the name sounded Victoriany). She looks like a game hunter cuz those look cool, but actually she tracks down poachers, cuz hunting elephants for ivory is something only ass holes and douchebags do. Also the harem pants were a compromise after it was discovered she was a woman, since you can't go on safaris in skirts and bustles, but a proper lady also shouldn't have her legs on display like a common trollope. :)
Steampunk is really neat, IMHO. I'm really not ambitious enough to make a steampunk outfit, but I think some of the things people come up with for it are pretty amazing. Also it always inspires me to draw stuff, which is a good thing.
