What if... we had a tunnel system? I haven't felt any tremors since I arrived, so I don't think earthquakes could mess that up... And it'd make it easier for us to get from place to place without being hindered by the cold and snow and wind. ...It might end tomorrow,or it might end in a week, or in a month, or a year... Why should we take the ( Read more... )

I can make the tunnels, no sweat. And I can make sure they'll stand up to an earthquake too.

Do you think you'd be able to reinforce them enough to withstand the compressions?

[Part of Yuna doubts that, but then another part reasons that humans-- as far as she knows-- are the ones who caused the whole time and space compression in the first place. Who's to say it'd be out of their power to clean the mess up, or at least withstand it?]

That would be an excellent idea, Miss, but the thing I worry about is when this world becomes unstable. Once in awhile something will compress or decompress, and even the Safezone will shift.

It's toppled buildings before. [And he was trapped under one, but we won't go into that.]

I just... I'm worried about the world shifting, and someone becoming trapped underneath, in the tunnels. We may not be able to get there in time.

That's true; I haven't thought about the decompressions. But, then, I think that's a problem whether we're underground or not. Like you said, it's toppled buildings before, and there's really not much we can do about that. I guess.. we'd have to reinforce the tunnels as best we could, and maybe not have them too deep underground so there wouldn't be as much weight. Or maybe if we went deeper, it'd be less affected?

[She's rambling out thoughts.]

[He seems content to just listen to her talk, she's got a few good ideas there, and he does the same thing when he's trying to get something done. He smiles, and sets his chin on his hand.]

That's actually a point. Shallower tunnels would be easier to rescue from, but more likely to collapse. Deeper tunnels would be much harder to rescue from, but less likely to be affected.

We also have to wonder... we have creatures called sandworms here. If you haven't been to the Wastelands you might not have seen them, but they tunnel underground. I have no idea how far the Safezone extends downwards, though it is a sphere, so it might do the same thing downwards...

[Gosh, watch him ramble back.]

I guess they both have their ups and downs.

Sandworms? There's a fiend at home called a sandworm, or it was... a something worm, anyway. I wonder if what you're talking about is similar... I hope not.

You know, considering the kind of world this is... I wonder... if there is an underground? Beyond several feet of earth... would anything even be there?

It ist a gut idea, but... Alphonse ist right.

Vhat about vhen there are compressions? Ve just had vone at Christmas vhen those new buildings all came in. Perhaps that means this vorld ist a bit more unstable right now.

When did the last one happen, besides that one, anyway?

I do not know. I have not been here for long enough to have seen another.

What would you like to know? I have a lot to tell. Hmhm.

I think you're tunnel idea would be great as long as we can makes sure that no flood waters can get in.

Everything! You should come over sometime-- or I'll go over-- and we could just share information about our worlds.

That's true. Do you think having the entrances inside the buildings would help that? Not inside the ones that are occupied, I mean, but the ones that are nearby.

Make tunnels. In the frozen earth. In a city that changes around from time to time.

I do not think anyone wishes to be trapped underground.

I know, I know. But there are always dangers regardless of that. Of the buildings falling, of the fiends breaking through and wrecking havoc in our most vulnerable times...

We'd just need a way to figure out how to make it stable, and how to make it easy to get out if there's any problems.
