Car rentals:

Have any of you had much experience with any car rentals (besides Zipcar) who could advise me on which services (i.e. Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, Avis, etc) to use/avoid? I'm looking for the most cost-effective way to rent a car for a long weekend (preferably picking up/dropping off in Allston, Cambridge or Boston). Any input or suggestions would be ( Read more... )

Enterprise is the easiest to rent if you are in the city. National is what I use when I travel.

Bit of warning make sure you have a Credit Card (not an atm-debit card) . If you use an ATM-Debit card they either will charge you more, prevent you from renting, or charge a hold on your card till it is returned.

Also, make sure you get the insurance.

Car rental companies seem to love to "upgrade" (or up*size*, which isn't great if you're trying to conserve on gas or meandering through narrow, twisty roads), so my advice is to pretty much always book the smallest size possible, don't worry about getting another step up since there's a good chance you may get that anyway, and at least this way you're still paying the most inexpensive price.
