Look at the top 10 movies of this summer (from 5/1/2009-8/31/2009) and seeing how my prediction's went.

My predictions (from 5/12):

1. Star Trek
2. Transformers 2
3. Terminator: Salvation
4. Up
5. Ice Age 3
6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
7. Angels & Demons
8. Night at the Museum 2
9. Wolverine
10. District 9

3 Dark Horses: (Movies that might make the list)
1. Year One
2. Bruno
3. Public Enemies

The real top 10:
1. Transformers 2
2. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
3. Up
4. The Hangover
5. Star Trek
6. Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
7. X-Men Origins: Wolverine
8. Night at the Museum 2
9. The Proposal
10. Angels & Demons

And that means...

1. Star Trek [Way off. 3 pts for still being in the top 10.]
2. Transformers 2 [I spot off. 7 pts.]
3. Terminator: Salvation [ouch. No points.]
4. Up [1 spot off. 7 pts.]
5. Ice Age 3 [1 spot off. 7 pts.]
6. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [3 pts. It was still in the top 10]
7. Angels & Demons [3 pts. It was still in the top 10, but just barely.]
8. Night at the Museum 2 [Exactly right! I get 10 pts.!]
9. Wolverine [2 spots off. 5 pts.]
10. District 9 [This was a matter of timing, I think. The film's only 2 weeks old. But it looks unlikely to make the list. 0 pts.]

3 Dark Horses: (Movies that might make the list)
1. Year One
2. Bruno
3. Public Enemies

I got exactly none of the dark horses right! But I did guess 3 of the worse-performing movies of the summer!

In reflection....

I think I did pretty well, considering. The films I missed, The Proposal and The Hangover, were breakout comedies that would have been hard to guess. And I don't think anyone can blame me for thinking Terminator 4 would do better.

My hubris did get me in trouble with Star Trek though-- when I wrote this I had just seen the film and was thrilled with it. If I'd been savvier I would have put Transformers 2 in the top spot and let my beloved Star Trek sink lower. I also underestimated Harry Potter, probably due to my own feelings towards the film franchise. But I also thought, with the books finished, the Pottermania would die down a bit. At #2, I guess I was wrong.

Angels & Demons also underperformed. This is a matter of me underestimating the American viewer, which hardly ever happens (except in case of Transformers 2!). People who saw and were bored by "Da Vinci Code" stayed away. Good for you, American movie-goer.

My total points: 45 out of 106. That's 42% correct.
