Red Hen did some research on it, and so did the Lexicon, and both concluded that Rowling never did announce what Patronus James had. The nose biting tea cup was the oldest rumor. James' Animagus was a stag, but a number of fanfics have the stag as his Patronus.

For the record, all other Patronus' were animals, so I guess that the estate of "His Dark Materials" could do a "Willy the Wizard" type of lawsuit. ;)

I used to love the SH boards until they had that spam infestation. It would be nice for them to make a comeback.
