why U2 could never have been one of my favourite bands

it hit me last night as i was falling asleep, completely out of nowhere, and i couldn't get to sleep because of it. (weird, i know.)

all of my favourite bands have an album that reminds me of every season. let's go to the evidence:

depeche mode:

winter: violator, black celebration
spring: construction time again, songs of faith and devotion
summer: music for the masses
fall: some great reward

the the:

winter: dusk
spring: nakedself
summer: soul mining
fall: mind bomb

pet shop boys:

winter: nightlife
spring: please
summer: very, introspective
fall: behaviour

peter gabriel:

winter: us
spring: so
summer: iii
fall: up

coil:

winter: musick to play in the dark volume 1, black antlers
spring: musick to play in the dark volume 2
summer: love's secret domain, stolen and contaminated songs
fall: astral disaster, remote viewer

and so on. now then, let's do U2:

winter:
spring: the joshua tree
summer: achtung baby, zooropa, pop
fall: the unforgettable fire

there's a hole there...and a really important one at that. winter might be my favourite season how can i possibly love a band that never made a "winter" album? if i squint my eyes - er, ears - i can maybe wedge in warin that position, but i think that's mostly due to the video for "new year's day".

(though even if i had loved U2 ever, i'd feel pretty dirty about it considering the crap they've done over the past ten years. musically and otherwise.)
