That Muslim caricature stuff

My thoughts on the recent Muslim outrage at the satirical Danish toons here.I dunno, maybe I should be flamed? There is a difference between acknowledging some issues that exist and taking the piss out of them to a mad extent, but when it's satire rather than deliberate, clear hate-mongering from a party that's got a track record of hating ( Read more... )

I guess the problem here is cultural difference, mostly.. I don't know whether satire is commonly "known" or understood in the muslimworld, but even if it is, they still have things that are TOO SACRED TO THEM TO MAKE FUN ABOUT, and specially not by total outsiders. Now, I think we all here in the western world have opinions that are way different than those of extreme muslims, but still - I understand their rage. The way they're reacting seems so odd to a western person like me though - the way they are targeting their hatred towards the whole nation, and even wider, towards whole Scandinavia, and not only the one magazine that published the pictures or the maker of them. I suppose that in countries like Syria the media must be well cencored by the government and they think it's the same way everywhere.. or something. Anyway, now that it's already gone to burning up embassies, it's getting rather scary. So, in conclusion - I don't accept the way they're reacting to these 'toons, but I do think they have a good (good enough, anyway) ( ... )

I mean... yeah, how stupid do you have to be? Drawing and publishing those toons was pretty damn suicidal. Not the sort of people I'd want to piss off.

Exactly!

And there was a whole serie of those 'toons... from media I first got an expression the whole thing was caused by one pic, and thought the muslims were REALLY overreacting. But there was, what, like ten pics or something.. Constant mockery. No wonder they're upset.

Only now actually read the wikipedia article to see they were all published at the same time and drawn by various artists. Well whatever. Stupid and indiscreet deed anyway.
