When Jim is four, his father takes him and his brother stargazing in the fields outside their house. It's dark and scary, and cold enough that Jim starts to feel grateful for the many layers of clothes his mother insisted on, but all that stops mattering when his father starts to talk. Jim has always known that his father is in Starfleet - it's the reason he's gone so often, after all - but before tonight he never really understood what that meant.
He looks up at the stars and listens as his father describes the planets he's been to. Planets populated by people so very different from himself that Jim finds it hard to imagine. He wonders what it would be like to fly out there, among the stars, like his father does, and suddenly wants it more than anything else he's wanted in his short life.
"I'm going to be in Starfleet when I grow up," he announces. His father smiles and Sam rolls his eyes, but Jim barely notices. He fixes his gaze on the brightest star and makes a promise that one day he'll be up there exploring those worlds for himself.
He doesn't break it.
