Kirk loves Spock, but that doesn't mean they never argue. Right now, for example, he can feel his fingers tightening on his book as Spock orders the temperature up for the third time in an hour.
"Are you trying to give me heatstroke?" he asks. "It must be 100 degrees in here."
"I'm merely attempting to raise the temperature to a comfortable level," Spock replies with unusual sharpness. "For once."
"So put on a sweater or something," Kirk tells him. "I don't want to have to strip down to my underwear because you're trying to turn the place into a sauna." He raises his voice and adds, "Computer, lower temperature ten degrees."
"So the temperature must be set for your comfort?" Spock demands. "As if it isn't enough that I must constantly adjust to an environment set for humans, now I cannot even feel warm in my own quarters."
"Our quarters," Kirk fires back, slamming his book on the table. "Which are set to a temperature that we agreed on to accommodate both of us. In fact, you were the one who-" He breaks off suddenly as it dawns on him that under his annoyed expression Spock is curled in on himself, arms crossed against his chest as if cold. In someone else he'd think it was an act, but Spock isn't that kind of person. "Are you feeling okay?"
Spock's eyes close briefly. "I have a slight headache," he admits.
Kirk stands and comes over to him, touching his hand to Spock's forehead. "You're burning up," he says, his annoyance evaporating instantly as he feels the heat pouring off Spock's body. No wonder he's cold. "Why didn't you tell me you weren't feeling well?"
"It didn't seem relevant," Spock replies.
"Of course it's relevant," Kirk tells him. "Come on, let's get you into bed. Computer, raise temperature ten degrees."
"That is unnecessary," Spock begins, but he allows Kirk to usher him into bed and pile blankets on top of him.
"Are you warm enough now?" Kirk asks, when he's finished covering Spock with every blanket they have.
"I am not sure," Spock replies. "I think perhaps body heat would be beneficial." He blinks innocently at Kirk.
Kirk smiles. "Just let me get my book."
As it happens, he does end up stripping down to his underwear, as well as pushing most of the blankets onto Spock's side of the bed. It's still uncomfortably warm, especially with Spock's fevered body curled against him, but as he goes back to his book, fingers running lightly through Spock's hair, he thinks he can deal with it.
Just this once.
