Sometimes he wonders if the other him ever felt like this; like he's making it up as he goes along. He doesn't think he did, though - the way Old Spock talks, the other him was the best captain ever. That Jim Kirk worked his way up the ranks like everyone else; he didn't save the world and then get thrust into command because there was no one else.

Kirk wouldn't trade his captaincy for the world; flying through the stars and seeing what's out there is better than anything he could ever have dreamed of. But there are times when it's also utterly terrifying. He has more than four hundred lives under his command, and sometimes he can't even look at them without being reminded of the consequences of failure.

Every time they meet an unknown situation, his crew - his crew, and he still can't quite get used to that - looks to him for guidance, and half the time he isn't any more sure of the right answer than they are. But he's the captain, and they're depending on him, so he gives the orders and tries not to think about what will happen if he's wrong.
