I've spent most of the last two days pouring over a few books pfrank lent me, and playing around, and I've gotten to the point where I can write simple programs in C++, have them important export data files, do any calculations I need, et cetera. I still need to work on nested loops and general design structure, but it's coming along well. I should ( Read more... )

... students actually pay thousands of dollars to gradually learn over four months things that can be self-taught from a few books in just a week or so.I'm not sure about that. I actually took a programming class at Bona's (I think it was C++, it might have been C+, it's been a long time). And even with the class, I struggled. With due respect, I think you forget that you are A.) A highly intelligent person with B.) a mind inclined and disposed to the kinds of thought patterns favored by computer programming. Not to mention that you have access to programming software not easily obtained by the general public. Could some people teach themselves programming? Sure. I've known several people who did. But some of us need the slow and gradual method. It's kind of like saying that if students read enough and paid attention to what they read closely enough, we wouldn't need writing instructors. It's certainly true for a percentage of college students, but by no means is it true for all of them ( ... )
