Hm. I usually suggest going through NewEgg.com since they have the best prices for the power.

You'll want Quad Core with a good cache since you're going to not only be crunching numbers, but twisting and breaking them as well. this is a pretty good place to start, especially because NewEgg is having a bundle special on motherboards with it. If you shop around and find the OEM version of the chip or something similar, it will be even cheaper ( ... )

Also, since he's not a computer maintenance type person, he should probably go with something that comes with a warranty for when parts fail.
