Sleeping at night

I think I finally understood something about social class in the US. One of the very last replies used the phrase "It's what we tell ourselves so we can sleep at night." (A true TCK perspective, also - inside and outside.) That made me understand. Americans do not want to acknowledge the existence of social classes and replicating poverty patterns ( Read more... )

There's one thing you said that I don't understand. Why would the acknowledgment of the existence of social classes create responsibility, blame and guilt? I know that many people are poor, and I know that many people are ill-mannered. Does my knowledge give me the responsibility to aid the impoverished and teach the uneducated? I don't think so. Their need for money or breeding does not obligate me to help them acquire it.

Not by logical necessity, but many people feel that it does. Of course, generalizations like this don't apply to everyone.
