The Malaysian GP - Push the button and activate the acronym

Apr 10, 2011 12:53

No umbrellas out in Sepang. Yet.

Schumacher describing the malfunction with his car as 'stuff'. That's very descriptive there, Michael. So, 'only seventh' for Massa, and a 'massive effort' for Alonso to get fifth - what would have been a proportionate response then? Mclaren looking forward to the race being so much closer to the Red Bulls. Webber and Vettel and Hamilton together waving at the crowd, or at least waving at the crowd while standing next to each other.

Jake and Eddie standing behind Webber's bodywork until Red Bull mechanics dash in to take it away from then.

Puzzled and failing Ferrari with Alonso voiceover. Alonso thinking the team is a bit stronger now and disappointed with the pace versus winter testing. And talking up how near he and Massa are competitively, more so than might seem on the results. Domenicali trying to take the long view and talking downforce and the history of Ferrari - Italy and not just Italy expects, etc.

Nick Hamilton's début at the Renault Clio series. Talking to his dad - who's hopes of having one kid getting a proper job seem not to be happening. Webber talking to Lee about Australia and just having to perform better, and looking back on last season

On the grid and trying not to hit a suddenly appearing Di Resta with the camera/cameraman. Taking pointers from DC and mostly less nervous than he was in Melbourne. 'I doubt we're going to get a response' but still hanging around Michael Schumacher in the hope of some words (while not being rude). Petrov looking forward to the unexpectedness, glad of his GP2 experience and not bothered about the rain. Interrupting Bernie Ecclestone and the Prime Minister of Malaysia and then looking at Button's exhaust pipe and talking to a happy Mclaren designer.

Vettel walking and talking with Lee, or at least opening and closing his mouth for all of the lack of sound coming out.

Eddie and Jake with a cup of tyre bitsani and then litterbugging it at their feet. Looking at the sky and the clouds just over 'there'. Eddie's definition of one word not being the same as most people's. Overheating the components of the cars, and also the drivers.

Webber has a problem on the formation lap.

Heidfeld up into second from the start. Massa ahead of Alonso, he must've dropped back. Webber another with a very dodgy start, down to tenth? Before the end of lap 1. Rosberg down to thirteenth. Vettel-Heidfeld-Hamilton-Button-Petrov-Massa-Alonso. Di Resta takes Rosberg on lap two.

Vettel making a bit of space against Heidfeld, but Hamilton not catching the Renault. Perez and Maldonado come together. A bit of Force India flying off. Barrichello's punctured and then in for tyres, but not damaged.

Replay of the start. Wow Webber really did just go backwards. Alonso fighting with Petrov but can't get past and then Massa took him on the inside. Webber's failure being a KERS issue - had to change his battery in parc ferme after it failed on his in-lap from qualifying.

Kobayashi back ahead of Webber, and Massa's made it past Petrov. That should make it more difficult for Alonso, with him and his Petrov passing issues. Or it would if Petrov could keep it on the track instead of making an excursion on the last corner that sees the Spaniard pass him and drops him into the clutches of Schumacher.

Conflicting radio messages - a few drops in the next half hour, but no proper rain - or - rain in the next ten minutes.

Webber has line on Kobayashi and takes his place back, only for Kobayashi to use KERS and DRS to take Mark on the straight. Mclaren having to resort to plan (Q, R, do we even have a letter for Heldfeld taking second into the first corner?) WTF.

Vettel reporting some vibration of the tyres. Button falling back to one and a half seconds of Massa.

Webber overtaking Kobayashi in a sequence of corners. And Kobayashi's ahead by the end of the lap. I get the feeling I could just copy-paste that at various intervals for the rest of the race.

Hamilton's not close enough to DRS Heidfeld, or it's just not enough. Corners 7 and 8 are anticipating rain, or something less anthropomorphic.

Maldonado retires, Webber stops early for not new slicks.

Button, Massa and Alonso are all within two seconds. Vettel's mechanic telling him 'we know where you are' which you know, I would hope they do. He's in the Red Bull with the number one on it.

Hamilton pits on 13, gets out and then immediately reports in that it's raining. And well, I'm sure he didn't do it on purpose 'Mclaren feeling Heidfeld had already ruined Hamilton's race' or he did it deliberately but without hardly thinking of Lewis at all. Vettel pits on the same lap for slicks. Then Button pits and Massa stops but has a sticky front left which slows down his pit-stop and drops him back.

Newly stopped Hamilton is trying to overtake Schumacher and Buemi while they are trying to overtake each other and using as much track as possible. Schumacher dives into the pits and Hamilton gets to the front of that group of three. Alonso's already pitted.

Vettel is now on plan B. Petrov's pit stop puts him behind Massa. A Lotus wanders off the track and back round a corner. Kartikayan retires his Hispania.

Alonso has no problems taking the inside line to take advantage of Button and his open door policy. Jenson tries but can't make it back. Buemi under investigation and then with a 10 second stop and go penalty for speeding in the pitlane. Hamilton makes a fastest lap as Vettel's told he's going to plan B. Apparently this translates to a three stop race.

Vettel-Hamilton-Alonso-Button-Heidfeld-Webber-Massa. Petrov discarding carbon fibre at the end of the straight. Webber on plan A (four stopper?). Massa uses KERS to take Webber easily. Alonso and Massa and Kobayashi are as fast/faster than Vettel.

Webber in for pitstopping. Heidfeld gets three wheels on the gravel. Button pits and Hamilton on the next lap along with Vettel, who gets out behind the Heidfeld-Massa fight. Barrichello's out and Perez parks it. Hamilton takes Petrov into 5.

Alonso pits on 2 and so does Heidfeld. Massa's taken by Vettel on the straight and pits the next lap, for a better stop onto soft tyres. Out ahead of the Schumacher-Kobayashi fight. Alonso's complaining about his rear wing not working - 'we will check, we will check' as he's behind Button after the pit stops.

Vettel told not to use KERS. And then Button (and Hamilton) are told Vettel's told not to use KERS. And then Vettel asks to be told again. Presumably that message is not repeated to the Mclarens though.

Webber gets even more familiar with the pitlane with a 3rd stop on lap 32. Petrov has Kobayashi and Sutil takes Alguesari in the same place just a bit later.

Alonso's being dropped just a bit from the guys in front. Stella's message about everybody being on hards and encouraging him to go faster gets the 'I'm pushing, I'm pushing, no more' response from Alonso. Echoes of Silverstone.

[Barrichello's gearbox went, Trulli's sitting in his car waiting for Lotus to try and fix his clutch and Perez's car got hit by a bit of Toro Rosso that wasn't attached to the rest of a Toro Rosso and then his car stopped going]

Kobayashi pits and Hamilton's stop on lap 38 is a bit longer than it should be, enough so that Button's stop on the next lap sees him out in front of Hamilton. Webber's crawling all over the back of the second of the Mclarens. Radio to Hamilton 'we do not want to stop again'. Martin's mental arithmetic impressing Coulthard.

Vettel goes in after Button lays down some fastest laps. Ferrari follows that by bringing in Alonso, but a poor stop leaves him behind the Hamilton-Webber scrap.

Alonso's inquiry for a weather forecast - 'No rain, no rain'

Heidfeld and Massa get up the back of Petrov. The Russian lets his team-mate past, and then gets taken by the Ferrari in short order.

And another stop by Webber. Him and his very hard-working mechanics (as opposed to the Lotus ones who are trying to snooze through with only two) who apparently got sent to a tent in Wales over the winter.

Alonso slipstreaming and DRSing against Hamilton in front. Hamilton with position, Alonso on the inside, Hamilton has the better line, Alonso trying very very hard, Hamilton having a very wide Mclaren.

Alonso on the radio telling his engineer his rear wing isn't working and getting that confirmed. Then in few corners getting up to the back of Hamilton and not pulling out in time. Knocks the right rear of Hamilton and does a pretty good job of destroying the left side of his own front wing. Trying too hard. Alonso in for a new nose.

'Talking rubbish, not for the first time or the last time' - Martin commentating on his comments on Webber's stop. Rosberg not having a good day despite taking Alguersari.

Webber closing on the Heidfeld-Massa thing, and Button gets warned about taking a long go on his tyres. Extended duelling with Massa, nice driving on both their parts, but eventually Webber makes the overtake stick. Tyres are fine - aero is bit off for Hamilton. Heidfeld wings it (sounds better than DRS) and takes the Mclaren of Hamilton. And then Webber's pursuit is cut short when Hamilton goes wide enough at a corner so as to completely lose the track to the Red Bull's advantage. He pits after to end up behind Petrov.

Who ends up with his Renault wearing a marker board. Petrov went wide on the previous corner, jerked it back across the bumps and gets three wheels in the air and careers across over the track. And yanks at his steering wheel which is no longer so attached to his car as it should be.

Webber pushing back at Heidfeld. Martin worrying about Petrov and his bruised tailbone.

Vettel-Button-Heidfeld-Webber-Massa-Alonso-Hamilton-Kobayashi-Schumacher-Di Resta over the line. Heidfeld matching Petrov's podium from the last race. Massa beating Alonso and then looking over at each other at the end of the straight.

'You beauty, Seb' and Vettel a happy and cool bunny, 'Thank you. It's a pleasure, pleasure, every week to be with you' on the radio.

Massa 'did a good job today' tootles home slowly - not overly endowed in petrol, perhaps. And I guess not as the marshals are preparing to lug it back. The 'firm but gentle' Adrian Newey is the Red Bull representative on the podium.

Vettel wanting to know from Button where he was at the start, and from Newey about all the stops. Button and Vettel adjusting their hats. Vettel liking the trophy he got - even without the kangaroos. Heidfeld looking fairly happy too. Vettel being slightly ganged up on by Button and Heidfeld, getting a face full of champagne before going off to annoy Newey.

Talking to Horner and recommending that he ties something to his foot.

Hamilton is disappointed. Asked when his race started to go wrong and he starts talking about Heidfeld and Jenson in turn one. We boxed too early. Before I wanted. Pitstop that let Jenson by.

Mark Webber ruing that lack of KERS and the amount of back and ahead and back again that ensued, but otherwise sort of okay with his race.

Vettel in the press conference and the sudden appearance of black and gold in his mirrors. KERS was variable during the race and then gone. 'I love what I do.' Falling a bit into the Alonso-Ferrari syndrome of 'I had a good race' = 'The team had a good race'.

Button a bit confused by the race, but glad to have got the second place. Heidfeld glad of the improvement in form from Melbourne and being able to fight with these guys.

Fernando and Hamilton to go report to the stewards after the race to discuss their incident.

Eddie is apparently much cooler now Coulthard isn't there to get in his space so much. And then they start bickering about each other's medical conditions while Jake tries to drag them back to somewhere that might vaguely be considered on topic.

'Despite never doing anything wrong in your career.' Jake asking David about the steward process. Which now involves putting both drivers (and associated team representatives) in a room with a video of what they did and watching them argue before coming to a decision as to any penalty that might be applied.

Discussing the possibility of Lewis brake-testing Fernando. Eddie getting, 'all fiesty now' and David anticipating getting a punch thrown at him, and reckoning 'it's your old team, they don't like me, David'. And what did they enjoy during the race 'had very nice soup and very nice icecream' and David interrupting to say he enjoyed watching the race, 'We did that too.' 'We enjoyed listening to you.'

Eddie 'fiery potato' Jordan. Hamilton to Red Bull possibilities? Martin in a more shiny, technical looking cupboard this time. Going over the start, and replaying it from various angles.

Mercedes and Red Bull packing up their garages already. Asking a shy looking Mercedes guy about when the stuff has to be in China 'Tuesday' and then scurries away. Obviously not expecting to have to talk to someone hiding out round the back as he was.

Schumacher commenting on an up and down race, but the Mercedes pace not being good enough. Only had two goes using the rear wing, and interested in the opportunities for strategy pit stopping throws up. Whitmarsh surrounded by interviewing people.

Martin going through the Alonso and Hamilton incident and the duelling beforehand. And 'tremendous race-craft by world class drivers who- don't like each other basically' and still sure it was down to Alonso and his misjudgement.

Great relief from Heidfeld and how much big fun he's having with Renault. Talking through his and Vitaly's starts and that all the guys in front of him were surprised to see him up there.

Button talking about having your bum right on the carbon. Eddie running out of steam and partway through a question. 'I can't stop smiling, Eddie' That he felt good in the car when his engineer was warning him off his tyres. More conversation about stopping and KERS and tyres. Looking for improvement in the next 7 days. Jake offering questions from twitter - Jenson: 'Is it my twitter page?', Jake: 'No it's mine.'

Jenson wondering if there was strategy being done - Vitaly Petrov - that 'he lifted earlier' and thinking if he was deliberately slowing so as to get the chance to DRS him by the end of the lap

Fernando not able to use his wing in the end of the race. And not sounding like the incident was down to him, but that he and Hamilton 'we touch each other'. Felipe's interview that it was a good race, pitstop excepting, and getting a bit lucky. Is he glad to be the lead performing Ferrari? 'Well, yes for sure.'

Talking about how secure Felipe's seat is - worried or confident and knows the team loves him. Can't just break a contract, you can negotiate your way out of them, but fairly secure according to Martin. Despite Ferrari's desire for Vettel and his Red Bull handcuffs.

Jake sending David off to look at the side. 'This looks like a pile of rubbish to me' and talking about the cooling systems of the dry ice. Driver fitness and David saying that 'this is the best looking group of drivers getting out of the cars' when they finish the race, and backtracking that he doesn't mean by attractiveness. Trainers and banking fitness and minds being slowed down by bodies.

Newey being interviewed about the technical side in general and KERS in more specific. Finally getting pushed into personally he'd rather not have it.

Vettel not sure what happened to Hamilton. Not even thinking about the world championship just yet. Not having KERS, having to shut it off and that not looking so good. Martin being slightly dubious about and not eating the chocolate they've been given by Vettel.

And cue the musical montage.
