I've gotten into Boneshaker, by Cherie Priest. I'm about halfway through and think it's neat. It's Steampunk meets zombies and has an airship pirate and goggles and bwee.
I think you might enjoy the Tamir Trilogy by Lynn Flewelling. It's fantasy with interesting political intriques and really quite creepy magic (with no vampires whatsoever). Book 1: The Bone Doll's Twin Book 2: Hidden Warrior Book 3: The Oracle's Queen
Also in the "fantasy with political intrigue and potentially creepy magic" category, with more politics, more magic, less creepiness and somewhat more admirable heroes and heroines are Lois McMaster Bujold's Chalion books. (The first two books are chronological, but the third isn't to do with the same people, and there may be more in this setting to come.) Book 1: The Curse of Chalion Book 2: Paladin of Souls Book 3: The Hallowed Hunt
Each of those seems to be nearly $8 per kindle edition, so I'll stop there. ;3
