I tend to shy away from saying anything is because of race in the more basic sense. It makes me uncomfortable when someone claims that something unjust is being done to them "because [they're] black" or something similar in nature, both because I tend to look at it as objectively as I can and find that it isn't true, and because, as a white Southerner, there are certain knee-jerk reactions that, no matter how educated or open-minded I try to be, are bred into me. The sort of tiny racial judgments that are in a culture that you grow up with that are difficult to stop from popping up in your head

Oh my fucking word, you are so right. I've read the Bible cover to cover probably about 10 times in my life, and I would count it as one of the most valuable things I've ever done. It really helped me come to terms with my own spiritual beliefs and why I can't call myself Christian anymore, and also convinced me of how deeply fucked the church has become thanks to ignoring the Bible's real message

I took an intensive Bible study class right around when whatever faith I thought I had started waning, and an intense study of the Bible pretty much clinched it for me--no way was that my religion.
I'll admit actually studying the Bible has caused me to ditch the "It's the literal word of God, that he Dictated to Moses/et al." part of my faith.
Looking at it as a people's collective reflection of their relationship with their God, how their understanding of God changed as their circumstances changed, and how they believed God was revealed to them is where I ended up. I see the Bible as a collection of reflections on God and I can see a theme developing throughout it as it struggles with the world around the authors/editors and between the authors/editors/traditions themselves.
Though perhaps pastors of the church my parents attend might be scandalized at my beliefs now, I think it's a more consistent faith, and I hope one closer to what God would have for us, or at least for me.
Let me tell you this: I watched both the Moyers interview and the NAACP, and they were both brilliant. I haven't watched the National Press Club stint yet, but so far the mainstream media's track record isn't very good.
The only thing I can fault Wright for is the last 5-10 minutes of the Moyer's interview, when he started talking about Obama. That, he messed up on a bit. But the response in the media was blown out of proportion.
It's the FUD strategy. You throw enough mud and find out what sticks, and then use that, no matter whether the FUD mud is fair or even true. And the republicans are rather explicitly helping target Obama now, because they want to fight Hillary. They figure she'll help turn out the Republican vote.
