Summary: When someone breaks our heart, can someone new stop the pain?
It seemed like a nightmare. No, it was worse than that. Words could describe what he was feeling at the moment. Disappointment, heartbreak, betrayal, agony … you could name them all and still it wouldn’t be enough.
Did he see it coming? No, if he did maybe it wouldn’t hurt as much, he thinks. Even if his work as a computer consultant for a big company makes him travel regularly he makes sure than when he stays in Tokyo he dedicates time to his lover. He thought they were happy. Of course Jun had mentioned that he missed him so much but they never fought about it. However, Nino wanted to spoil him and had secretly resigned and was soon be working for another company, less money, more working hours, but more time with Jun. He thought it was worth it, Jun was worth it; just how wrong was he?
They had been living together for three years already, and Nino loved everything about him. That’s why he came a day earlier; he wanted to surprise him not only with his presence but only with the news. He didn’t thought he’ll be the one getting the surprise.
He walked into their apartment around nine that day, he thought that Jun must still be up, reading a book or just lazing around. As soon as he step into their living room, he heard sounds coming from the bedroom, he recognized those sounds, groans and moans of pleasure he has when he’s with Jun. He used to love those sounds, but in that moment he feared them. He slowly approached the room, his mind desperately looking for an excuse, for something to hold on, but he knew it was in vain as he heard a low grunt more like a scream, he came Nino thought.
He didn’t go further; he flew the apartment, his bag forgotten and heart in pieces. He didn’t know how much in distance he walked that day, when he noticed he didn’t recognized where he was. Fortunately, he had his wallet and soon he was registering to some cheap hotel, cellphone turned off hours ago. He didn’t have any family in the city, only friends, common friends. He wanted to talk to his best friend, Aiba, but he guessed that’ll be the first place Jun will go.
He didn’t sleep that night, he crying so hard and so much, until he felt his eyes dried Then, he just lay there staring at the ceiling trying to come out with reasons, but he was still at lost. He gave up finding one, and he didn’t care anymore. What’s done it’s done and he could only pick up the pieces and start over. He knew it wouldn’t be easy but he had to start as soon as possible, this time he wouldn’t give this heart so easily, and he’ll never again put love over money. He’ll have to get through, tougher and wash over his past life to have a new beginning, where he could pretend there was no pain, no heartbreak, no Jun.
He called Aiba, and asked him for a favor.
When he made sure Jun was out of the house, Aiba got inside with a list to pick Nino’s belongings. It wasn’t much, Nino was never a material kind of guy, and said list consisted of mostly three categories, clothes, games and his precious guitar. Aiba hated to be put in this situation, but when Nino had called his that morning he had made his choice. He knew Nino wouldn’t recur to anyone else other than him and he wouldn’t fail him. For that he had to be honest and tell him what he knew, Jun slept with their sleepy looking neighbor from the first floor (reason why Nino didn’t want to enter the building), it had been happening for a while and Masaki had yelled at him when he heard that. But Jun also said he was sorry, he knew he made a mistake, and he wanted Nino back. He looked truly regretful for his actions. But Nino didn’t care for that. He made Aiba swear to never let Jun or another where he was living or working now. To close his heart to Jun pleads and put his distance. Yes, Aiba made his choice, it was costing him a friendship but he just couldn’t let Nino alone.
One year later…
It was hard to believe but Nino had become a workaholic, and that made him get respect, promotions and of course, a better paid. Better than the one he threw away. He lives now in the opposite side of Tokyo with a roommate, Aiba’s friend, Toma. He doesn’t have much free time because he doesn’t allow himself to dwell in any kind of memories and sentiments he doesn’t want to feel anymore. He had closed his heart and only dedicated to his job and in the weekends, to his games. He sees Aiba regularly, more so since he started dating Toma, but Jun is never mentioned. He knows Aiba stopped being Jun’s friend and that he misses him, for that he feels guilty.
His recently promotion had come with a new boss, Sakurai Sho, an up and coming business man with a winning smile and a ruthless heart to make more money. His reputation preceded him but Nino didn’t even blink at that. He didn’t care for the man, or his sloppy shoulders, he just tried to get the job done, before and better than his workmates. Apparently, his new boss took in notice that and he became his right hand for next projects. Among his entire department, he was known as the “boss’s pet”. Nino hated that nickname. It was so far from the true, he was never one to kiss someone’s ass and he wasn’t to start now, no matter how firm that ass looked. Their conversations never drifted far from strict business, and they never pretended to care for what happens in each other’s life. In that way they remain a mystery to one another. It seemed like a mutual understanding and it worked pretty well until now.
It wasn’t supposed to happen that way. Hell, it wasn’t supposed to happen at all. He attended the company party because he felt obligated to do so, and he would play his part, he’d walk around to let anyone see him including his boss Sakurai and at the first opportunity he’ll sneak out to continue beating the boss.
But everything went wrong when he saw him, how was he supposed to know that Jun’s company will be handling their CM’s for their new system and that he was invited along with some associates. When their eyes met, Nino froze, the glass of wine almost slipped out of his hand. Jun was the first to react, he made the move to approach and Nino’s eyes grew bigger and glazed on fear. Just a second later a figure obstructed his camp of vision.
“Ninomiya, good, I want you to meet some people” he indicated to the group ahead.
Nino looked at his boss still in a daze. Maybe his face showed something that his boss caught, because next he whispered “Are you okay?” in a concern tone of voice.
Nino shook his head, regaining his senses, getting his strength back and putting on the mask again. “Y-yeah, it’s just the wine that’s getting to me”
Sho frowned at him, disbelieve written all over his face, so Nino averted his gaze in case he give more away and walked ahead to the group where Jun was.
Sho introduce to him and he saluted to all of them with a forced smile but good manners. When it was Jun’s turn he avoided looking directly to him, but still talked normally. For moments Nino noticed that Jun wanted to talk directly to him and gain his attention but at the end he didn’t say anything.
“Well, it was really nice to meet you, but I have to take care of something” Nino bowed quickly and turned around with the only goal to leave as soon as possible. He could feel how each passing second there was opening wounds he vowed to close.
“Ninomiya!” his boss was practically running after him
“I-it’s something wrong Sakurai-san?”
“That’s what I would like to know” his boss replied
“I don’t know what you mean” Nino averted his gaze
“Please Ninomiya, you know me better than that. Something was fishy right there and I need to know what is”
“Why?” Nino looked at him defiantly
“Eh?”
“Why it’s that important to you? It has nothing to do with my job so I don’t know why you’re standing here. I have to go” he turned to leave but his boss stopped him again, looking more concern than before
“Please, I need to know” he spoke softly
Nino looked down and whispered his reply “It doesn’t matter doesn’t it? Even if I tell you, witch I won’t, it won’t change anything. That company would still be responsible for the promotions and he...” he shook his head “… or are you gonna hired another one instead? Just for me?” he smiled bitterly and defeated
His boss took a step back “You’re right. I wouldn’t do that… however if you have any problem in dealing directly with anybody it’s best to speak now, because if you do then-”
“You’ll fire me?” Nino didn’t look affronted by that, he lifted his head and returned Sho’s intense gaze “I wouldn’t care. I’ll just leave and start over, I’m used to do that for him…” he sighed
“Him? Ninomiya would-”
“Nino!” both turned their gazes to Jun who came running looking scare
Nino tensed and his eyes instinctively went for the door, he was so close… until a hand grasped his wrist
“Kazu, please” Jun pleaded, but Nino refused to look at him directly, he was weakening and he knew it “Kazu, please don’t run away anymore. I’m sorry, I’m so sorry”
Sho just stood there looking at the scene, suddently everything was starting to make sense. He felt like an intruder but for some reason he didn’t leave.
“Kazu” Jun talked he hugged him “I’m sorry, I’m so sorry please forgive me. Please don’t disappear again. I know I was stupid, I know I deserve your anger, but please don’t go again. Please Kazu, I still love you, I never stopped loving you I was just… I hate myself for hurting you that way. Please Kazu you have to believe me. I need you so much”
It took a moment for Nino to push Jun away, he hated himself for being weak and let his barrier down, he could feel the tears falling no stop but that was enough “Get off me!”
“Kaz-”
“Stop it” he yelled, that name bringing so much memories “don’t-”
“Please Kazu, I love you, I still do and-”
“Love? What good your love brings? It’s empty, it’s hurtful, I don’t want it. I don’t need it. I’ve been good without it anymore. It’s over, you made sure of that” Nino was trembling by now, the weight of his words, of his pain finally catching out. These words were meant to hurt Jun, but it was hurting him the same.
Jun grabbed him by the shoulders a little too strong, refusing to let go when Nino struggled “Nino, please you have to forgive me. Please”
“Let him go!” Sho finally interrupted
The pair turned to look at him
“I said let him go” Sho repeated with more authority, but Jun still didn’t move, instead he tightened his grip making Nino flinch in pain
Sho saw that and in two steps he pulled Nino away from Jun, Nino instinctively lean to his boss chest, looking for any kind of protection
“Sa-Sakurai-san?” Jun looked dumfounded
“He doesn’t want to talk to you now, so I suggested you return to the party Matsumoto-san”
“I can’t do that. If I do that maybe he’ll disappear again and who knows if I ever see him again”
Sho gazed down at Nino, who only hided his face deeper on his chest. He sighed “I assure you that Nino won’t do that again... He-he wouldn’t leave me”
“Leave you?”
“Yes… we’re a couple… and now I’m taking my boyfriend home, so excuse me”
Sho quickly walked pass Jun and hugging the smaller man he took him to his car. As soon as they parted, Sho turned on the radio “If you want to cry, just do it, I won’t listen” and turned the volume to the max, directing his eyes to the road to give Nino some privacy.
He heard whimpers, and soft cries, but he never turned to look, he continued driving around the city with no specific direction. When the sound stopped he turned to look at his coworker who had fallen sleep with his tear stained face leaned on the window. He looked so pitiful that it broke Sho’s heart.
When Nino woke up, they were in a parking lot he didn’t recognize; Sho was sleeping in the driver seat next to him. Strangely, he felt so much better now, maybe he needed that, needed to see Jun to finally put an end to it all. The chance than Jun was asking for was something impossible to give, his love for Jun was tainted a year ago and there was no turning back. Maybe time will teach him to forgive and he couldn’t forget; maybe, just maybe, he could someday look at Jun as a friend, but not now, is was still too soon for him. With a deep sigh he turned gain to at his sleeping boss. He was surprise for how he helped him and felt extremely grateful. He remembered the lie and for some reason his cheeks flushed. Taking this time as an opportunity to really look at his boss, he came closer to observe his features. Big eyes, strong masculine jaw, smooth skin and those plumb lips. He really was a temptation.
He shook his dirty thoughts away and decided to wake him up.
“Nino…miya?” Sho asked with dreamy eyes “What time is it?”
“Almost two”
“Eh?! That late?!”
Nino nodded feeling suddenly guilty “I’m sorry, it’s my fault” he apologize looking down
“It-it was nothing. That party was boring”
Nino grinned at that, he knew he was lying
“Come on. Let’s rest here” Sho climbed out of the car and Nino followed him
They were in Sho’s apartment minutes later
“Do you want to drink something?” Sakurai asked
“Are you asking me if I want to get wasted? Hell yeah!”
Sho came back with a bottle of whisky and two glasses
“How classy” Nino joked, feeling for the first time relaxed since a year ago.
“It was a gift; I have to give it some use” Sho shrugged
“Now I feel honored”
“Oh please, I know you’re not that kind of people”
“What people?” Nino was curious
“People I have to pretend with… Stuck up people”
Nino laughed “What a language…You surprise me boss”
Sho smirked “that’s why I like working with you”
“Everyone does” Nino retorted
“Always the humble one” Sho gave him his glass
“Someone has to be”
They laughed again, sitting next to each other on the living room carpet.
“It’s good to see you laughing”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
“You barely do…”
“True, but so do you”
Sho nodded “Cheers to that?”
They clashed their glasses and refilled them over and over; making fun of each other and of the people they work with. The previous barriers they had put for theirselves long forgotten.
When he bottle was at his half and they were already drunk, Sho dared to ask “So, he hurt you that bad?”
Nino only nodded
“And you left?”
It wasn’t so much of a question but Nino nodded again
“Wasn’t any way you could work it out?”
“Nop” Nino took another sip, emptying the glass
“I see... His loss” Sho pointed with no direction whatsoever, flushed all over his face
“Damn right” Nino filled his glass to cheer again “To cheating boyfriends and broken hearts”
Sho furrowed his browns and offered “To new beginnings and hot bosses”
Nino chuckled “How silly”
“Why? Am I not hot?” Sho sounded hurt
Nino fidgeted “Well…”
“Got you!” His boss broke in a big laugh
“Oi!”
“I knew you thought I was hot... everyone does” Sho sounded annoyingly proud leaning closer to Nino
“I do not!... Well, at least not until today, but I’m drunk so it doesn’t count!” He tried to defend himself and erase that winning smile
“It does count” Sho pouted cutely, still with traces of amusement
Neither knew who move first , maybe they both did at the same time, what was important it’s that they were kissing fiercely the next moment, separating only to take some needed air. Soon clothes were only a disturbance, too hot to be dressed anyway. They didn’t move from the floor and they had to improvise with the lack of condom and lub, but still Nino felt so protected and taking care of. He had missed that; even if he had tried to play the tough kind of guy he knew he was a sucker to be the spoiled one. Soon, moans were all it could be heard from the apartment, and Nino surrendered himself to these new emotions toward his boss. Sho felt accomplish, he had been waiting in the back for a chance to make a move since the moment he meet the slim man, but Nino didn’t let anyone in, so he settled to wait. Only hours ago he was so mad, that man had hurt Nino so much and he had to do something. He knew he wanted him, and while he’s thrusting into him, he knows is forever. Even if it’ll take time, he’ll make his best to dry all the tears, to cure all the wounds and to make him loved him back. Sho is confident.
“Nino” he moaned repeatedly “S-stay with me Nino” he was coming closer to release
“Sho… agh” Sho sucked his neck, leaving marks but he didn’t care “Sho, harder… please”
Sho did as he was ordered; dragging a scream from Nino, he slow down but Nino pinched his butt as complain
“Sho, damnit, harder… faster”
“Nino…Nino” Sho put everything in each thrust, sweat all over them, he was focusing in not coming before his partner. When Nino clench around him, his back arching and his seed tainting his hand he finally let go, spilling inside the smaller man and falling on his chest.
When the breathing was calming down and the world stopped spinning so wonderful, Sho noticed Nino has fallen sleep, with small trace of tears in his face. He kissed them away before pecking the thin lips. He drowsily walked to his room to get some tissues and a blanket.
After cleaning both, he put the blanket above them as he hugged the man closer to his chest. Another peck and he felt sleep too.
The sun woke them up hours later, head throbbing in pain and a sore back for Nino. He looked kind of lost and with half open eyes he took in his surroundings, memories slowly coming back to him.
Sho read the fear in Nino’s eyes and before the man could even say a word or run away he kissed him deeply, putting his all effort to distract him until they could talk.
“I know it’s too soon, but I’m content with waiting” he said when he pulled apart “More than content… I’m in bliss” Sho added with a soft smile, still holding him down.
Nino blinked at him, his eyes glazed from sleep and that mind-blowing kiss “Sakurai…”
“I like you Nino. A lot. And I don’t want you to think that this was just a drunken fuck. ..At least it wasn’t for me. I want you to give me a chance, can you do that?” he asked as he caressed his cheek tenderly with one hand as the other didn’t leave his waist.
“I-I… you…” Nino didn’t know how to respond but in some way saying no wasn’t an option “…give me time please”
Sho nodded “All the time you want, just promise me you won’t close your heart... Even if it’s not me, you should never do that” He pressed his hand above it “It’s too precious”
Nino averted his gaze, sadness returning to him “It’s broken… Who would want it?”
“I would. I do… because it’s yours” he brought Nino’s gaze on him.
“How corny” Nino couldn’t hold the smile creeping up on his face.
“But you like it” Sho smiled back, suddenly feeling more confident as Nino still didn’t pull apart.
“I do not” Nino pouted
“Then why are you blushing?”
“…Because I’m naked and all sweaty and gross”
“Me too… so how about a bath… together?” Sho grinned mischievously
“You’re such a pervert” the blush deepened
“Only for you” He leaned to kiss him again.
Nino rolled his eyes but returned the kiss as eagerly as Sho was demanding. Somehow, he couldn’t stop the happy feeling from taking over his heart; this man in just one day had protected, consoled him, fucked him senseless and confessed to him. It was too much and at the same time it seemed too little. He wanted more.
Sho in all his naked glory took Nino to the bath and washed him gently, rubbing the skin and placing small kisses whenever he could.
“Sho?” Nino called for him softly.
“Um?”
“About Jun…”
“Matsumoto?” Sho stopped rubbing soap on the milky white skin to pay more attention.
“Yeah, I think I can handle it…. working with him” the smaller man sounded a little doubtful but still decided on doing that.
“Are you sure?” Sho hugged him from behind, kissing a spot on his shoulder where a hickey was.
“Yes… I don’t want to run anymore…. and I think Aiba will be happy with that”
“Aiba?” the boss frowned, slightly jealous.
“My best friend” Nino responded with a chuckled noticing Sho’s reaction.
“Should I be jealous?”
“Always. I’m pretty loveable you see”
“I can totally see that” he hugged him tightly knowing Nino was just teasing him.
“Not from Aiba though… or Toma”
“Toma?”
“My roommate”
Sho never consider himself the jealous and possessive type but knowing other men were that close to his now lover irk him to not end.
“I want to meet them”
“Eh? What for?”
“Just… you know” he fidgeted a little “…meet them”
“Sakurai Sho…”
“Okay, to tell them you’re mine so if they have any hopes they can send those away” The older man admitted quickly.
“Oi, I haven’t accept you yet” Sho looked hurt “… but I’ll introduce you anyway” he added making his boss grin like a fool “…only as my boss”
Sho pouted cutely making Kazu smiled at his silliness “Okay, as my friend”
“Special friend?” Sho asked hopefully
Nino sighed pretending to consider it “What the hell… my special friend”
Sho pecked him before dragging him out to bed where he could make his magic and elevate the status from “special friend” to “boyfriend”. He knew it was a long road but he already took the first step and winning Nino’s heart was something he couldn’t pass on. As he said before, it was too precious.
One year later…
“I’m home!” Nino yelled from the doorstep of his apartment… their apartment.
“Kazu, you’re back!” Sho came from the bedroom looking all excited at the sight of his little lover.
“Obviously” he rolled his eyes but still kiss him tenderly, however his peripheral view caught the mess in the kitchen “What happened here?... you tried to cook, didn’t you?”
Sho had the decency to look guilty enough “I wanted to make you dinner… you know… to celebrate”
“You know you’re banned from the kitchen until I say so. It’s too much of a danger Sho-chan” the smaller man scold his boyfriend half for the cleaning duty he now has and half worry sick for Sho’s safety.
Sho lowered his head “I know… I’m sorry Kazu”
Kazu bit his lip, hating himself for making Sho look like that but he knew it was necessary “…And what are we celebrating?” he tried changing the subject.
“You don’t remember?” Sho gazed up on him, disbelieve written all over “It-It’ss one year since-” he looked really sad as he started explain.
“…since we drunkenly had sex” Nino completed it with a smirk.
Sho nodded eagerly, grinning again because Nino remembered it. But he still is a little disappointed that Kazu left without him “But you went to visit Aiba and Toma and didn’t even let me go with you” he complained.
“That’s because Jun was going to be there and I know how you get when he’s around” Nino led him to sit on the couch with him.
“He… Kazu!... I should have been there with you!”
“And you will… when you behave better” he pecked Sho to calm him down and spoke softly “I still feel guilty for making Aiba choose, please, try to understand me”
Sho sighed as he held him by the waist “I know, I know… I’m sorry... I promise to be more patient next time… but it’s… he still looks at you with those eyes, it scares me that you may-”
“I won’t” Nino cut him with complete resolution in his eyes “I loved him, he loved me, it didn’t work out, I moved on”
“Sometimes it scared me how you see things”
Kazu starting kissing his neck to calm him down “Why? It’s the true. It hurt at the time but no anymore. It’s just the past. It had to happen for me to find you”
“Well… if you put it that way, I guess I can be grateful to Jun then” He said all animosity flying out the window as he felt the little bites and his arousal waking up.
“Just don’t say it to him ‘kay?... Now, in the celebration part…” Nino stood-up abruptly to take the bag he brought with him, revealing a bottle of whisky, the same brand Sho treated him that night “Let’s start!” he exclaimed with lifted arms. Sho quickly pull out the glasses from the kitchen and sitting on the floor they started drinking, a happy feeling spreading in their hearts.
This time they didn’t get drunk, they barely finished the first glass and were already over each other. Everything was different now… they were different... and somehow they were the same.
That night they needed alcohol to give into the desire to be join as one; now, love is what brings them together every day… for many years to come.
