For those of you who write out there, do you find yourself outlining your thoughts so you know about which direction you're going to write in or do you just shoot from the hip and just write what comes to you? Does anyone ever write out of order ( Read more... )

Sometimes I outline but the majority of time, I don't. I think the last time I outlined and actually followed the outline was when I was writing a bunch of 10k stories for NaNo '06 and I was trying to hit a specific word count with each section. Otherwise... I have a hard time planning something out in advance. Which is probably why I'm never getting very far with my novel.

I'm finding that if I outline I changing things rather than just going with the flow. I'm planning on writing two pretty long stories but I almost just want to see where everything takes me.

Thanks for letting me know how you do it. I'm interested in this novel you're writing. Stop playing with Tom Conrad and write.

I'm just kidding. LOL

sometimes i'll loosely outline the major plot-points so i don't lose my way, but only if i'm writing something long enough to warrant such a thing, which is really pretty rare. usually i just try let characters tell the story and do my best to stay out of the way as much as i can. :)

It seems that writing down the major plot points is a really good thing. I never used to do that but now I am and it's helping me stay focused on what I want to accomplish with this story. I do want to let the characters show me the way though. We'll see where all this takes me. It's been so long since I've written anything.
