and I wish we had separate elections for the executive and the legislative, that way I wouldn't have any qualms in voting for the minor parties (like in the local councils)
Not that it would necessarily do us any good - look at the whole mess of the Italian parliament. Luckily for them they are a big country with lots of resources, and they can afford to snub foreign investment. Unfortunately, their kind of instability would spell suicide for us, because investors look for stability and that is what our current system offers (given the right choice ;)
We live in a small island and have to accept the consequences of that ... or else move to Oz :P
...when will the politicians stop treating the population like idiots?
Although i still insist... Politicians are desperate to keep a large proportion of the population uneducated and ignorant, as people with little or no education are so much easier to control and brainwash.
You just described the United States and most other countries. During election years it just gets more apparent to those who bother to pay attention.
100% agree. it's not just the states, it's the whole world... Australia included. I'm not really suggesting anywhere is better, but i think it's pretty apparent that in Malta, it takes on a whole new level. Maltese people are the only ones who vote voluntarily and have an INCREDIBLY high rate, the 2nd highest in the world after Australia, but that's only cos we HAVE to vote here, we get fined $500 or something for not voting! Malta has a rate of something ridiculous like 96%.... it's in our blood. NOTHING riles and divides the population like the elections.. uwijja anyway.. the system is so fucked and unrepairable that ignorance is the only way people will believe and actually vote for people... the rest of us vote for the lesser evil..
it's such a pity that we can't vote for actual "good guys". ANYWHERE!!!!!! Maybe the real good guys know that being in the government is absolutely useless... :(
The best person for the job is the one who would never want it to begin with.
It takes a certain type of desire deep within someone, a desire to control, I think, that would make them want to become a politician. It gets dressed up in "public service" and all that, but deep down I think those who actually do run the governments are there because they want to shape things, control things, and make things into what they or others like them want. I don't believe it's necessarily malicious intent, just their natures.
