So I keep hearing about Dreamwidth, and as far as I can tell, it seems to be basically identical to LJ. Why is it getting so much buzz these days? Why are people switching over?
As far as I can tell, the major points of appeal are that it's committed to being open-source, they promise not to ever have advertising (isn't that what LiveJournal promised in the beginning, too, though?!), and they talk a lot about being more community-centric than LiveJournal is in terms of decision-making. I will probably get one with my username here whenever someone I know has extra codes just in case I eventually switch over, but I'm not super-impressed right now. They are missing a lot of things for Paid users that LJ has, like PhonePosts and the Scrapbook, and free users can't even find other people based on Interests. That's pretty much 90% of the way that I find new communities I might like on LJ so that seems totally bizarre to me.

Yeah, I registered my username there just in case, but I have no plans to switch over at the moment. I don't see what I can get out of Dreamwidth that I don't already get out of LJ, and I'm happily established here.
*nods and agrees*. How did you get your registration? I guess what I'm hoping is that there won't be a mass exodus that would require us to leave or change our ways. I'm glad you're not moving (yet)! (By the way, I've always loved your icon!! It's a ... wyvern, isn't it?)
Most of the people who I know that have jumped to dreamwidth are the ones that deal in explicit fan material. People in fandom are worried about another strikethrough incident. I mostly use lj to read fanfic and keep track of my irl friends, so I'll stay on lj unless that somehow becomes inconvenient.
