Summary : Making promises is a good thing. But, what if keeping them becomes impossible?
They were still highschoolers when it occured. They were together but Ryosuke was not able to do anything for him. The useless Ryosuke did nothing except staring at his lifeless body on the ground, which had just been hit by a car. When the brown haired boy came back to his senses, the first thing he thought of was to bring the wounded boy at the hospital.
Ryosuke was so relieved the moment he saw the chibi opening his eyes. The latter seemed okay but he was not. He faked a smile when he realized what happened to him. He tried to reassure the chubby cheeked boy with his perfect smile, yet Ryosuke knew better. The younger was not able to hide it from him. He had lost his ability to speak. Ryosuke thought it was his fault. If he had stopped the shorter boy from running that time, all of this would have never happened.
Ryosuke was his only family, since his parents were not from this world anymore. That's why he got to learn something else that day, something that his boyfriend had been hiding from him since the beginning. The doctor said he needed to talk to the older boy. Ryosuke thought it was about his voice but it was not only that. The chronic kidney disease... Ryosuke had no idea what it was at that time. The only thing he knew was that his most important person had contracted that disease a little while ago, and that it had been developing bit by bit. Although he assumed that the younger boy hid it not to worry him, Ryosuke disliked the fact that he had to be informed by a doctor about his health.
Didn't he trust him enough?
No, Ryosuke did not think that was the problem. He understood why he did not want to tell him about it. The older boy would have done the same thing anyway.
That's when the ill boy decided what Ryosuke would do of his life. Okay, to be honest, Ryosuke chose his way according to his boyfriend, not himself. Some people already have a dream in their last year of highschool, some don't but they choose their studies according to their tastes. Ryosuke did not enter any of those groups. Ryosuke was different. Because his world revolved around that boy, not himself. Consequently, he was the one who chose Ryosuke's goal in life, unconsciously. Not the other way around, like it should have been.
Everything happened because of Ryosuke. The chibi kept denying it, to no avail. Of course Ryosuke could not have given him the disease but he was blaming himself for the loss of his beloved's voice. Ryosuke should have known earlier that he was hiding the fact that he was ill from him. Ryosuke should have discovered it earlier. It was his fault. He felt nothing but guilt... He wanted to make up for it, then he made the decision to become a doctor.
Ryosuke promised his angel he would find a cure. He promised he would not let him be hurt again.
He promised he would be by his side forever.

"Yuri!" Ryosuke called him and saw him turning his glance at the brown haired boy, smiling.
"Sorry, did I make you wait long?"
Ryosuke bent his body, putting his hand on his knees, due to the running he just did. At the same time, he breathed soundly. Yuri shook his head and told him that it was okay, using sign language.
Sign language had been his "voice" for 7 years now. They took lessons together after that incident. Yuri was such a clever student, as always, whereas Ryosuke had a hard time following what the teacher was saying. Yet, the latter did his best. If it was for Yuri, nothing seemed impossible to overcome for him. After that, they had not any problems to understand each other, it was just perfect.
Yuri had sent the doctor a text earlier to say that he was going to drop by his hospital, to have lunch with him. He also said he had something to tell him. Ryosuke sat down, and the black haired boy gave him one of the two bento boxes he brought. Ryosuke opened it and beamed at the sight of the content. His boyfriend made the food look like strawberries. There were even some eggplants, and real strawberries for the dessert. Ryosuke could not help smiling like a child.
"So what is it that you wanted to tell me?"
Ryosuke looked up and turned his gaze to him, to come to the main point. The person to who the question was directed bit his lower lip cutely. That's what Yuri always did when he was worried. Ryosuke understood that he was hesitating. Was it so hard to tell him? Ryosuke smiled gently at him so as to help him feeling at ease, and succeded. Just after that, Yuri took a deep breath, sign that he was going to start "talking".
Yuri admitted that he wanted to start working, as a sign language teacher. Even though he shot some glances at Ryosuke to see his reaction, he was looking down anxiously most of the time.
"No." Ryosuke protested coldly, staring intently into the younger's eyes.
He expected the other's "why?", thus he explained his answer.
"You shouldn't push yourself too hard."
Yuri said he was not, that he was fine, and Ryosuke noticed his puppy eyes attacking him. That always worked on the chubby cheeked boy, didn't it? But Ryosuke had to resist.
"The last time you tried working, you fainted at your workplace! You know that you're weaker than before, so please, pay more attention to your health. I'll always be worried about you. What if it happens again?" Ryosuke justified his words, speaking and using sign language at the same time.
Since Ryosuke knew Yuri so well, he knew the latter was going to plead again. Yet, the older boy did not want to argue more with him. He sighed deeply. That stopped the sad-looking boy from begging more. He was disappointed, the brown haired boy could read it on his face. Ryosuke hated seeing that expression of his.
Then, the chubby cheeked boy got up, not having touched at all at the food Yuri made especially for him. Alas, the older boy had to go now, or he would have given in to his beloved. Ryosuke did not intend to deprive him of everything. Of course, he did not. However, he wished Yuri could understand how he felt.
Ryosuke glanced a last time at Yuri, seeing his eyes filled with sorrow, with threatening tears to come out. Then, the older turned his back to him and went back to the hospital. Ryosuke could not stand seeing him hurt. Yet, he could feel the chibi's eyes on his back, his sad eyes, brimming with tears probably, before he definitely left.

A few days had passed and Arioka Daiki told Ryosuke about the new teacher. Yuri could no longer hide it from his boyfriend. He perfectly knew it would not last long before Ryosuke discover it anyhow. But even if he was aware of that fact, he still did not listen to the other. As expected of the stubborn Chinen Yuri. The school where he was teaching was unknown to Ryosuke, and the latter never came across it on his way to the hospital. Unluckily for Yuri, Daiki was a good friend of both Ryosuke and himself. He was also worried about the short boy, that he might force himself too much. Ryosuke was not the only one after all.
Daiki had asked the latter if they should do something about it. What could they do? Prevent Yuri from working more? Ryosuke did not have the will to do that. After starting that job, his little angel gave him the brightest smile ever each time they met. A smile Ryosuke had not seen in so long time. He was always smiling, yet the chubby cheeked boy was not blind. His smile faded little by little, those past years. And suddenly, it started shining again, even brighter than the sun. Ryosuke could not take that smile off his most cherished person. He did not want to be the reason for that smile to disappear from his face. He told himself he would never let that smile leave Yuri's face.
Why give in so easily whereas he was totally against his decision to work? Ryosuke did not know. He guessed he just could not compete with his Yuri. The only thing left to do now was to pray for his wellbeing.
