Summary : Making promises is a good thing. But, what if keeping them becomes impossible?
One day, Ryosuke worked overtime because of a patient that showed strange symptoms. He could not get himself to leave the hospital, before having tried to find out what the problem was. Furthermore, that patient had the same disease as Yuri so he obviously could not be indifferent.
Once he felt like it was enough for that evening, he closed all the books and sighed out of tiredness. All of his coworkers had already left the place a while ago, going out for a drink. Obviously, Ryosuke had refused their invitation.
When he got out of the hospital, the brown haired boy could feel a fresh breeze on his skin. That's one of the reasons that made him enjoy walking at night. All the streets were calm. No noise cold be heard, except the one from the slender branches which were blown by the wind.
Ryosuke took all his time to get back to his apartment. Nobody would be waiting for him.
At least that's what he thought.
How great was his surprise when he saw a sleeping Yuri in front of his door. At first, he was quite dumbfounded, looking over all the reasons that might have made the younger come to his home. As soon as he regained his composure, he rushed to the chibi's side, concern all over his face.
"Yuri! Yuri! Are you okay?" he shook his body softly, in order to not wake the other up, but strongly enough to wake him up. When he saw that Yuri was not showing any reaction, Ryosuke shook his body with more strength, desperately. Deep inside, he had no idea what to do. He thought about all the possibilities... It could be out of tiredness. He might have overworked. It could be his illness. It could be-- His chain of thoughts was stopped the moment he felt Yuri's hand on his cheek.
"Yuri..." was the only thing that came out of his mouth, as he felt hugely relieved.
Yuri then strongly pinched his cheek.
"Itai!" Ryosuke squealed, looking confusely at the chibi.
The latter told him not to worry so much about nothing. After a few seconds, he added that he was okay, that he simply fell asleep because the owner of the apartment did not seem like he was going to be back anytime soon. With this, he smiled at Ryosuke. Of course, he fell asleep. It was past 2 am.
"I'm sorry..." Ryosuke said in a whisper.
The black haired boy went to a sitting position, then told the older he would forgive him if he opened the door, since he finally came back. The doctor chuckled (he knew the other would as well, if he still had his voice) and nodded. They both got up at the same time, and Ryosuke unlocked the door, letting the guest enter first. After taking off their shoes, they rapidly made their way to the living room. Ryosuke put his denim jacket on the coat stand, and asked the younger to give his black leather jacket. The latter complied. Ryosuke added his jacket to the furniture, while the other made himself at home, by sitting on the sofa, where only two persons could fit in.
The apartment was very small. No need to walk much to reach the kitchen or the bedroom, all the rooms were linked. No doors, apart from the front door. Nevertheless, it was more than enough for Ryosuke to live a decent life. He was not spending much time there anyhow. The major reason for him to come back home was to sleep.
Too lazy to cook something proper for dinner, Ryosuke stuffed himself rapidly with random cakes in the kitchen before heading to the living room, to join Yuri on the sofa.
"Did you eat?" he asked.
Yuri answered that he went to the convenience store to buy a bento box for himself, on his way to Ryosuke's apartment. The latter nodded, satisfied. The next few minutes, the room was filled with a heavy silence. None of them uttered a word. Well, practically, only the chubby cheeked boy was able to do that. Yet, Yuri's hands did not move either. It was an awkward moment for them. Usually, they would plan to see each other through texts. This time was different. What kind of words would be good to break the silence?
Ryosuke was conscious that asking the younger why he came here would be wrong, but at the same time, he wanted to know so badly. Thus, he opened his mouth as to say something-- Yuri stopped him in his doing, with sign language. He turned his glance to the brown haired boy, saying he knew what he wanted to know. The eyes language were more than enough then. The two of them stared at each other intensely in the eyes. Ryosuke could see it, in Yuri's brown orbs, the look that said "I simply wanted to see you.". Followed some other minutes of silence, broke by the chibi again. Ironical, since he could not speak, isn't it?
Yuri put on a smile on his face before making a request to the other : he rented a drama, hoping that the both of them could watch together, and begged Ryosuke to let him stay over. The latter punched him lightly on the head.
"Baka." he said in a soft tone.
After closing his eyes -thing that he did by reflex when hit by someone- Yuri looked up curiously at the other.
"Do you think I can show you the door, whereas it's past 3 am now? No wait, let me say that again. Do you think I can EVER show you the door?" Ryosuke reasoned. "That's impossible, honey..."
He gave the chibi his most perfect smile that could kill anyone in an instant, stroking his black hair at the same time. Ryosuke's words made the younger beam, clapping his hands, getting all excited like a child, thinking that his lover had agreed on watching the drama tonight.
However, Ryosuke's smile changed into a sad look, which resulted in the chibi's change of expression as well, expecting the bad news. The brown haired boy's hand moved from the other's hair to his right cheek. He was caressing this part of Yuri's body this time, lovingly. Through his touch, he could feel that the chibi's skin was undeniably, and almost abnormally, extremely soft. He also thought that no other skin could be softer than his. Objectively, he was unable to know about that but he could not care less, since Yuri was his everything. The latter had his cheeks painted in red under Ryosuke's touch. This kind of moment was so rare in their relationship. They could not think of anything else except treasuring each second of it. Sadly, this unique instant came to its end.
"I'm sorry, Yuri but I have to sleep... I'm really tired." While saying this, Ryosuke slowly took his hand off the chibi's cheek. His expression showed that he truly felt guilty.
"Let's watch it another time, ne?" he added, hoping that would reassure the other a little though, deep inside, he knew it would not help much to relieve Yuri's disappointment.
As he foresaw it, the chibi's lips curved into a smile, not really sincere according to Ryosuke. He told the latter that he was exhausted as well anyway. Liar. Yuri could try lying to anyone else, that would probably work. Nevertheless, it was pretty useless against Ryosuke. In spite of the chubby cheeked boy's ability to see through his lover's lies, there was nothing he could do at the moment. If he got mad because Yuri was not being honest with him, that would spoil the whole evening. They shared this kind of moments so seldom, he could not take the risk to ruin everything.
"Let's go to sleep then?"
Instead, he simply offered his hand to the chibi, who accepted the offering, delighted.

For once, Ryosuke left his workplace quite early and he was now on his way home. His colleagues told him to take a proper rest, due to the circles that could be seen under his eyes. The brown haired boy tried denying it, assuring that it was nothing serious and that he could continue working without any problem, yet he lost his battle. And there he was, waiting, with other people, for the red light to change into the blue one. He looked up to the cleared and bright sky. It was such a sunny day. No clouds could be seen.
All of a sudden, he felt something get away from his hand, as he unconsciously loosened his grip a bit. The little object fell on the ground, exactly where cars were passing by. Ryosuke kept staring at it. It was the red candy Yuri gave him this morning. Another car passed the zebra crossing and when it was out of sight, the candy did not look like one anymore. The chubby cheeked boy could still recognize the little pieces that once constituted the candy. He would not budge at all, his brown orbs either : they looked like they were being absorbed by the sight of Yuri's candy being broken. But in fact, his mind drifted to something else, to a person to be correct : Chinen Yuri.
His phone rang at that exact moment, interrupting the motionless moment Ryosuke was having. He came back to reality. As the people who were previously surrounding him went to the other side of the street, the brown haired boy was the only one who did not move an inch. He took his phone out of his pocket and responded to the call.
"Moshi moshi?"
"YAMADA! Come here right now! To your hospital. It's Chii.. Chii fain--"
He could hear Daiki's desperate and trembling voice on the other side of the call. Furthermore, the older used to call him 'Yama-chan', not by his last name. No need to listen more, Ryosuke hang up and his instincts made him dash to the hospital, as if he was running the 100 meters competition.
