The current government's approach to education never ceases to amaze me: just when I thought they had reached the limit, I am again reminded that stupidity has no limits. Nor, it would appear, has their desire to return to an earlier and less equal era.

if we want to export anything but wood, paper, and blondes, we need education.

That line made me giggle. Definitely, now is especially not the time to be cutting back on education. It's only going to become more important.

Yes; normally, our government provides extra money for the universities in times of rising unemployment. It's unclear to me why this would no longer be a good idea.

I hope the latest proposals don't go through :o(

In the UK there's a HUGE class element to postdoctoral study because you can't really get funding or even loans for it (it's okay in the sciences but I think only 8% of people get arts/social science funding). My boyfriend is currently trying to save the money to pay the tuition fees to do a masters-and if I wasn't graduating two years then I doubt he could afford to do a phD if he still wants to at that point.

Yikes - 8% is really low. That is a sad situation; I hope he manages to get the money together.
