i'm not into sports, not remotely, and least of all football.

i mean i had my stint in high school where i was in marching band, and well, it was nice to follow our high school in their brief run to state finals. but of course it was mostly because the team members were my classmates and i wanted to be a good friend.

otherwise i was the big geek, a nerd who resented sports and in a very stereotypical way some of the jocks and the perks they received. heck, at our high school we had something called the 900 club. it was a group of football players who were dumber than a bag of hammers (and consequently received a 900 or lower on the SAT) who nevertheless would get into ivy league schools or other private institutions of a similar caliber.

and then attending college of course i would get progressively more peeved as the budgets were slashed for all programs and other sports. even men's rowing, a proud tradition in the older schools, was cut. but as much as our team sucked the football program remained well-fed.

but regardless, at the risk of being called a fair-weather fan of my own school, it's been kind of heartwarming to see my school go on to be undefeated this season. i still refused to fight the crowds for a ticket and cram myself into a stadium with my drunken scarlet-clad fellow students. but there's just something about cheering for the underdog, and last night's 9th victory in a row over louisville really washed the last of the sports cynic out of me.

i tutor some of those big lugs and while i know a lot of them are very full of themselves, well, the look on their faces warmed my heart. it was really surprising to find my nerdy vehemently academically inclined self holding my breath as the tie-breaking goal kick flew through the air with 13 seconds left on the clock.

i know i'm just drinking the college koolaid, but you know what, it feels so good to believe.
