Wow, three, count them, three funeral posts in one year. Sad to say, they are all different people in my family.
btw, long post....
This is on my mothers side, flew out to D.C. last Thursday to see my great uncle George Theisen be buried in Arlington National. He served in WWII during the invasion of Iwo Gima. He got hit on the 3rd day I believe, shipped off to the hospital ship and stayed on guam or some hospital island for the rest of the war. Damn fine man, wounded in action, long happy life. Anyway, now for the story part, which is more fun…
Ok, flew in thurs, didn’t go to sleep the night before, slept like a baby on the flight. Get in and make it to the hotel, oh btw, the “Theisen” side of my family, is beyond loaded. So everyone that came to the funeral was put up in the…wait for it…. Ritz Carlton in georgetown, that’s right, the mother fucking Ritz Carlton. Talk about putting on the ritz, didn’t get stuck with my parents in a room, thx aunt joan, I get my own room with its own king fucking size bed. Couldn’t find any of the family when we got there so I treated my self to a bitching bath, you know the GIGANTIC baths you always see in the movies with the pillow behind the head. Fucking lush I know. I may be a broke mother fucker but its nice to get yer ass pampered for free. After the bath, I get that big ass robe on and spread out as far as I can on the big fucking bed, just pass out for hours..in the robe, best sleep I’ve had in a very long time.
Wake up, my Aunt Barbara has driven in from Annapolis, we go out to diner with my rents, 2 cousins and my aunt. Some stupid organic asian resturant, delish, had some toufu dish that ruled. Leave, still none of the theisen family has shown up yet, so my rents go off to bed, its like 8 or something, cousins and aunt off to bed too and lo and behond I’m down in the lobby and who do I see? My Aunt Joan, head of the theisen family, greetings around I call everyone down and the drinks are on. Can you say Sambuca?
http://www.efd.lth.se/~d94tn/sambuca.html after a late night and A LOT of sambuca, dozens of cousins I’ve never met, and laughs had by all, I pass the fuck out, very nice.
Wake up at 530, hit up the gym, which is nicer than any spectrum gym I’ve ever been in. hit up the shower and get my suit on for the funeral. Get to meet up with my dad for breakfast, he works in the city by the white house. Meh, dad I never see, lol the bastard regifted me. Gave me his old digi camera from last year. Decent breakfast, no awkward moments, took off back to the hotel to catch the limo to the funeral. Fuck that was hard to watch, the estranged parts of the theisen family show up to add some awkward moments to the fire, but they leave after the funeral, which is best for all…money does some weird shit to people, that’s all I’m gonna say about that. Watching the ceremony tho, when the gun shots when off, and they start playing Taps, holy shit, you’re a cold man if that doesn’t wet your eyes.
Off to brunch at the hotel which ruled, I mainly stuck to the pinot at lunch, but I still got pretty toasted with the rest of the family. Good spread, good food, everyone took off after the dinner.
My very distant cousin Jenna was taking all the cousins into Georgetown for shopping, meh I tagged along, I’m not anti-social. I found this record store called “Smash” they were playing some hardcore band that sounded like bad brains with a white dude singing, can’t remember the name, I was very good, didn’t blow a lot on music, just bought me a shirt. Hit up a bookstore and got a good read.
Make it back to the hotel, my 2nd cousin Eva and her friends were going to this Italian resturant, and oh my fucking god, this place was wow. I mean, way out of my league here, this is where Michael Jordan liked to kick it. Uber fucking fancy. They were actually asking me what kind of water I wanted, wtf. Distilled or sparkling. Wow . food was amazing, lots of lots of pinot, got pretty stupid drunk, make it back to hotel, and who do we see down stairs sipping drinks in the bar? Auntie Joan.
Sambuca anyone?
Sat with Joan, some 2nd cousins, and Uncle George’s lifelong friend Dick with his Swedish wife Elsie. The ladies are drinking at one table making as much noise as possible, I’m sitting with my 2nd cousin Brian, and Dick. Dick is a WWII vet that has know George since he was six, six years old, wow, I can’t remember anyone from that long ago. He was a tail gunner in the Pacific, he fucking bombed Tokyo, I mean holy shit, to see what this man has seen… I mean wow. Lots of Sambuca and wine later we all stagger, and I mean stagger up to our rooms. Great fucking night.
I wake up, make it down for breakfast to find out that by going to the plush restaurant the night before I missed some smores restaurant, and this by mere thought alone makes gut grumble, holy shit, I mean think of the possibilities, oh well, head out with the Fox part of the family, with Jenna leading us again. We take the metro to the Eastern Market, kinda like this upscale flea market, pretty cool, didn’t break down and buy anything…no dinero, but I did get to have a 5 dollar hot chocolate from Murky Coffee that was quite possibly the best hot chocolate I’ve ever had.

Make it back to hotel to see that we’re going back to the Italian Resurant
http://www.cafemilanodc.com/ but this time it’s a party of 16, best dinner with the family for the whole trip. Totally ritzy again, but at one point I come back from the restroom, everyone is in a conversation, and I mean everyone is laughing and smiling. I was totally moved, I stood up, waited for Aunt Joan to hush the family, and gave a Toast to the family. I dunno I was feeling very moved. Food was awesome again, we make it back to the hotel and I spent the evening with the cousins. They buy a movie off the tv, we watch that new king Arthur, meh, horrible plot, no character development, hot chick in bikini. So yeah, pretty disappointed. Walk Jenna down to get a cab, try and find a bar with my cousin Daniel, nothings open, head back up, pass out.
Wake up late for breakfast, ate with everyone, said goodbyes, flew home
And that was the abriged version, thx for reading if you toughed it out.
I’ll miss my Uncle, but I know he would have loved being there with the family like that.
