Not that it REALLY matters, but with how you wrote your tut, you put the exclusion layer right on top of the base, but in your "simple guide" image, you put the difference layer there.

Here is the icon I got from your tutorial. Well I used difference, because I didn't know if it was difference or exclusion for that part, aha.
