It's a Polish Catholic ritual food item... a lamb molded or sculpted of butter that sits on the table for the Easter meal. The ones that used to be sold in Detroit were made by the Kowalski company. They had peppercorn eyes and a bow, and they were hand trimmed of the mold line and sold in a pretty box. Alas, no more artisan butter lambs from Kowalski! They now sell mass produced injection molded lambs. Some people make them with butter put through a sieve for wool, but the one I made is most like the style I grew up with. I made the lamb in the photo I posted, and also another using this: http://www.monasterygreetings.com/prod_detail_list/s?keyword=butter+lamb. First time using this mold, and it looks very modern sculpture-ish.
