science stuff

Over the last few months I've become a junky for the National Geographic Channel and the Science Channel, especially when dealing with specials about high energy physics and the cosmos. Well, today was a perfect day for my DVR, as there were about 8 hours of specials on both channels, though I recorded them in HD and the DVR got kind of full in no ( Read more... )

Fermilab's a pretty cool place. My first research project in grad school was at Fermilab, writing C++ code to search for anomalous events in collisions.

As to the Higgs boson, it's hard to say whether that will ever be found. Fermilab, by its very nature, is putting constraints on the mass of the Higgs (whose mass is still pretty unknown at this point), so it's still a useful experiment. However, I personally think that its energy is too low to actually find the Higgs. There are still plenty of unsolved problems in particle physics, mostly surrounding mesons and other of those types of particles, so I don't think they're shutting down their doors any time soon...
