last night i saw kill your idols, which seems to compare a lot of the new york no wave scene around the late 70's-early 80's and the music scene around '00-nowish that i jumped into maybe early on? no idea when it really started or how long that lasted ( Read more... )

yeah, most of the "now" bands featured in the movie were some of the worst and most commerical they could pick, which seemd unfair, but I think the point was that 25 years ago, that kind of music would have never become popular like that at all. But even some of the more underground and challenging "now" bands are still pretty derivative. I mean, most of the stuff from providence had already been done by the boredoms at some point. And another edge that the no-wavers had was that they were pissed off and desperate; and they didn't have that ironic detatchment with an empahisis on having fun that these new guys do. There's nothing wrong with having fun, but I think artists are escaping into their media saturated pathologies instead of dealing with reality. There are so many fucked up things going on right now, and all that most art has to offer us is this decadant kitsch party. Anyway, that's my opinion on the movie. Sorry about the rant.

i'm glad something responded, and i'm glad it was you! i heard from ben furgal that either you or someone else was sitting in front of glenn branca during it????? i agree that all of that has been done. especially with art. everythign has become neon colored or painted in these weird mute blobby colors with thin lines etc. sometimes i think everyone is trying to become the late margaret kilgallen too, with her style and all. i understand that the no wave era was full of angry people. music to survive and breathe.
