Hoppers!

Jul 13, 2009 13:42

The wonders of having a backyard never cease to amaze me.

This week's revelation: grasshoppers! Little ones, less than an inch long, adorable!

They make a cool "poing" sound when they launch from the side of the tent.

I didn't even know that grasshoppers lived in Washington!

What?!

I used to chase them and crickets all over my back yard on Queen Anne. And Mats Mats, too! (crickets here are black)

In equally astonishing news, this year I've heard - wait for it - cicadas. Talk about not knowing what lives in Washington, I thought I was hearing ghosts. I thought I remembered we had them, but I don't seem to ever hear them anymore so I thought I'd made it up! that's always an awesome thing to hear :)

YAY BUGS I AM GEEKING OUT!!!

Wait, is it grasshoppers that have kinda butterfly-like wings and make a clack-clack-clack sound when they fly? Cause I remember the sound of those but I don't know what they look like when they're in Form Of Bug...

Oooh, I don't know - that sounds like cicadas! We should look at pictures. I think of grasshoppers as being pretty noisy.

And I now have a soft place in my heart for cicadas, entirely because of the name of the tattoo parlor.
