I just burn tested the silk I got got the lining of my bag, and now the whole downstairs smells like burnt hair. It self-extinguished and left a brittle ash. That should mean it's real silk right?

What color ash? It could also be wool if it was a dark ash. Grey ash is silk.

if it LOOKS like silk, and it gives you a burned-hair smell and a hard but brittle ash, it should be silk. Like Sstormwatch says, could be wool - but wool rarely looks or feels at all like silk.

Thank you both. I had searched all over town for a decent silk in the right color and finally found the color at Hancock Fabrics 70% off. It's more slubbed than I'd like, but for 1/4 of a yard I don't want to deal with shipping and swatches. Even though it was marked 100% silk, it looked more like a poly silk to me.
