Sweet bag update

I think I am going to go blind working on the silver background of my bag!  The thread is so reflective that it makes my eyes hurt as I work on it, but it looks pretty!

I have actually cut it all out and started over. I am just not happy with it! I will probably never finish the first side of this bag because I keep taking it apart...I think my husband refuses to look at it anymore ( ... )

I found that method somewhere else and tried it a little. It was hard getting the silver thread to "turn" that quick. I'll give it another try because theoretically it should make a more consistent background without the row effect. From looking at other examples have you been able to tell the "typical" scale of plaited gobelin (i.e. if it is often 2 down, 1 over, or 3 down, 1 over). I have been squinting at this one for a while and just can't decide for sure.

Do you have a good suggestion on a resource that shows how stitches were done historically as opposed to how they are done now? It seems some of the names stay the same but techniques may change. If this is covered in what you are working on, I can't wait!
