I was thinking about what it meant to live. In a world of utility, joy is a luxury. As long as the society functions, people can be unhappy. Productivity and efficiency measures our progress, our quality of life, at least as a whole. Economics decides what's good for America ( Read more... )

One need not buy into the Rat Race even though the Rat Race does dictate society's tempo. Find your own rhythm, then buy into the Rat Race to the extent that you can meet your own needs (including the need for happiness, which YOU can dictate if you have the courage and insight).

Joy is a necessity. At the very least, we're biologically wired for it. Otherwise, evolution would have jettisoned it as unnecessary. I like to think, though, that we've also been gifted with joy as something beyond mere biology, too.
