Time Warner for example, the cost of the modem is part of the service, though you are correct, what you talk about is a great way to save money.

I pay $49.99 a month for Internet from TW, and it's 12 Mbps downstream (we can get FiOS so they behave themselves, cuz, you know, competition).

My dad pays $34.95 a month for his 8 Mbps RR connection, because he kept telling them he was going to cancel the service. He did this year after year, finally they just lowered the price and left it there.

We cut out bill by going with a "dry" dsl line, and a two cellphone package with US Cellular.

My roommates pay for cable tv, the company I work for pays for my internet service and I only pay $40 every 3-4 months for a prepaid cell phone.
