So things are finally official and it's safe for me to tell everyone
.
Two weeks ago was the big packaging career fair. 81 companies came to talk to students who were interested in full-time and internship openings. Coke, Pepsi, J&J, GE, Kraft just to name a few.
To get ready for this I had to get my resume together. This might seem like a small thing to most, but it was my first time doing one. I went to a few free classes, and talked to some professors, and of course Babe helped. When applying for internship a "List of Courses" was needed. It was recommended that it be able to fit on one page. This was a near impossibility for me, because I've had "extensive training". It was also a chore to get my transcript of OCC. Just looking at that info brought back memories.
With the resume set and ready to go. I needed to look the part. I didn't think showing up in my blur suit would give the right impression. I used some funds from my fin aid refund to buy a tailored suit. Being that worked in a mall I got a discount at Jos. A. Bank. If any of you haven't gotten a suit fitted, and have the means to, I recommend it. It's fantastic. All these people running around making sure you look sharp. The only problem was the dress shoes that they had were too small. I had to stand on top of them to get the correct fit.
With the resume and a new suit, I was ready.
The fair was a two-day event. The first day was were you talked to company representatives, who took your resume and decided if they wanted to give you an interview the next day. I was at the fair for about 4 hours the first day, and left with three interviews and a bunch of free stuff. Later that night 4 other companies called to set up times as well. I ended up talking to Coke, Abbott Labs, Bristol-Myers, UDL labs, Boston-Scientific, Honeywell, and Toyota. Since coke wanted an hour interview instead of the standard 30 min I had 4.5 of interviews ahead of me, only breaking for lunch. Most questions was about team building, and leadership. I was also asking to define or give an example of Innovation. Some were very similar.
Toyota would've been interesting solely based on the fact that my dad works for GM. Coke had a lot going for it, it was my fav at the end of the fair. The following week, Kohler called and requested a phone interview. This peaked my interest because if they were so interested why not set up a interview at the fair. Besides the Kohler interview I heard nothing from the other companies. Which started my mind thinking the worst.
This tuesday I received word on Coke, Bos-Sci, and UDL. All rejects, and Coke and UDL were 2 of my favs. That didn't sit to well with me. Later that day during class I got a call from some guy named steve who wanted to talk about an internship. He never said the name of the company. What a tool. So I called him back, he's from Kohler. I'm already thinking that this was another reject. I never considered them because of the phone interview. It turns out that he wanted to extend me an offer. How crazy is that. I thought about it for the night. If only to research the company a bit. The next day I called them to accept.
Where is Kohler? you might ask. I sure did. It's located in Kohler, Wisconsin. Yeah, they own the city. Kohler is best known for the bathroom fixtures they make. Check them out
here.
I'm really glad that this process is over. I'm excited to start making money again, and to be working in the field. Some good time ahead.
