So the Maryland Senate passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, and it's on its way to the House (DC has already legalized it). Therefore...my facebook feed is full of the gay marriage talk. Umm...wahoo? Since that fun debate is on my brain, I think I'll throw in my two cents

Your final sentence: YES EXACTLY. Why is this not EVERYONE'S default setting.

I honestly feel that so much of this debate would be settled if we stripped the word "marriage" from the legal lexicon entirely, replaced it in every instance with "civil union," and explicitly stated that gender does not restrict the participants in said union. There. Done. Churches who don't want to perform union ceremonies for two men or two women don't have to; justices of the peace can formalize any union regardless of participants; everybody can SHUT UP.
