Character name: Meriken
Fandom: Afganisu-tan
Timeline: February 29, 2008
Age: ≈230 (looks 11-13ish)
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Super strength, high speed healing, eye lasers of rage, ominous billowing smoke clouds, “top-class” hand-to-hand fighting skills, trained with guns of just about every shape/make/form, can drive almost anything. Also, pretty dang near immortal.
How would they use their abilities?: FOR TRUTH, JUSTICE, AND THE AMERICAN WAY, DAMMIT!
Meriken’s more likely to keep her abilities on the down-low, unless needed. Super strength for moving heavy things? Sure! Sudden ominous billowing smoke clouds when she gets angry? Oops. Amazingly fast healing? Saves on bandages, doesn’t it. Laser vision setting something on fire? IT WAS OWNED BY A TERRORIST AND DESERVED IT!
Appearance:
Meriken doesn't much look like the personification of, well, anything. She looks like a young girl, about 4-foot-eight, with messy blond hair, and blue eyes, wearing an outfit a bit too old for her, in a business-woman sort of way (a blue suit jacket and skirt, white blouse, pink tie, and low heels). Her only concession to her apparent age (and more than apparent love of the dramatic) is a red, white, and blue cape that is not actually an American flag.
Background/Personality: SHE’S THE GODDAMN UNITED STATES OF AMERICA! SHE KICKS ASS, TAKES NAMES, AND IS THE BEST NATION IN THE ENTIRE WORLD!
Meriken’s history is the same as that of the USA, if all nations had prepubescent, mostly(?) female personifications, and all terrorist groups were personified by cats. So, have a basic rundown of the USA and Meriken.
It’s unknown how the whole idea of personified countries works in Afganisu-tan, since the manga really only covers the past forty years or so. One can assume, however, that Meriken as an individual only appeared after colonization, and somewhere in the British colonies. Britain (a decent sort of woman, abet strict and cold with Meriken) more than likely helped to raise her, though she had her own problems to worry about back home. Meriken eventually got fed up with Bri, and rebelled against her control.
Then came quite a few years of soul searching, attempting to figure herself out, being an annoyance to everyone near her, buying more land from Fransu, and exploring further and further westward. She grew and changed, like every country has to. The Gold Rush, the slave trade, abolitionism, a civil war that would continue to divide her people and her soul for the rest of her history, the first assassination of one of her leaders. Then reconstruction, the industrial revolution, the annexation of Hawaii, the colonization of the Philippines, World War I, Prohibition, woman’s suffrage.
Her rise to a world power came eventually, the thing she’d dreamed about for years, actually being a force to be reckoned with. Then the Great Depression, World War II and sitting on the sidelines waiting until Hinamoto’s planes attacked Meriken’s people and one of Meriken’s admirals spoke for the country (and the country’s hot-tempered personification) when he declared “Before we're through with them, the Japanese language will be spoken only in hell!”. Then her long Cold War with Roshian, two superpowers sitting and smirking at each other across the oceans, girls sitting behind polished wooden desks with weapons of utter destruction at their disposal. And all the while things to worry about at home. Civil Rights, segregation, feminism, the Vietnam war, and Nixon’s resignation.
Then Roshian’s empire of communism collapsed, and Meriken became the sole world superpower. Not bad for a nation less than three centuries old, though Meriken was never really one to look back and gloat about how far she’d come. But then again, she wasn’t one to look forward either, and Al-Nyada, a cat who had been living in Afugan’s, came up one day when Meriken was least expecting, and bit her.
Meriken was about as angry as is possible for a personification of a nation who had thought of herself as invincible and was then attacked by some nobody from nowhere. She raged off to Afugan’s house, and proceeded to attack both Afugan and the surrounding nations in an attempt to destroy Al-Nyada. Admittedly, Meriken did take some steps to help rebuild what she’d messed up, and also helped get the Tayaribani government a bit more under control, but still. THOSE DAMN CATS.
One thing that majorly separates Meriken (and the other nations of her world) from nations from series like APH and Scandinavia and the World, is that in Afganisu-tan, nations are less caracatures of common cultural stereotypes and more physical personifications of the actions and views of their government. So Meriken is rather hot-tempered, quick to act (and slow to apologize), thinks her way is best for everyone, and has an entitlement complex the size of Texas (the first thing she says in the comics? “The world was made for me~”). She speaks in capslock a lot of the time, hates cats (with good reason, since they personify terrorist groups back home), and lives in the White House. She can be an utter creeper at times (i.e. the Cold War), and loves superheroes. Her info sheet describes her thus: “She’s the richest girl in the neighborhood. She is a superhero fanatic. Her fighting skills are top-class. She has a tendency to think her version of justice is right for everyone.”

[A young girl (fairly normal looking for a human, almost-blonde hair, blue eyes). She can’t be older than thirteen or fourteen, but is wearing a suit and has an almost desperate look in her eyes.]
RIGHT! ROLECALL! ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS, REPORT HERE! I need to know when you’re from, where you’re from, who you are, and how long you’ve been here. This is extremely important. As the representative of the USA here on this ship, I need to know this in order to be able to provide you with the proper protection, since…
[A pause, a blink, some sort of emotion again (terror, loss, rage), and then back to her previous authoritative enthusiasm.]
RIGHT! ALL AMERICAN CITIZENS, REPORT RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW!
3rd person sample:
“This is the way the world ends/This is the way the world ends/This is the way the world ends/Not with a bang but a whimper.” A whisper, voice cracking once, on the second ‘ends’, as she fiddled with her papers. “Had it right and he didn’t even know it.”
Right! No point in standing around fiddling and feeling sorry for herself. She was still alive, which meant that there were American citizens still alive, which meant that everything was going to be just fine. She had her paperwork (one copy of everything), and had filled out what she needed to fill out. The papers she didn't use were serving as amusement as she stood in line, launching paper airplanes out across the room. Oops, that one landed on the spiky hair of some purple-skinned kid.
Meriken quickly diverted her gaze, biting back a grin. She just landed a paper airplane on an alien. Man, this was so cool.
Minus the whole "your entire planet is gone" thing. That sucked. But hey, they'd done what they could, and that was what mattered. Now... Well, now was now and who knew what would happen. Something amazing, that was for sure.
Something amazing.
