I've come to the conclusion that perhaps MMOs aren't for me anymore. As much as I enjoy(ed) Rift it seems to become more of a grind every patch. I'm either ( Read more... )

If you're willing to stay a few years behind the curve, it's quite easy to game cheaply with old shit off of Steam. Pretty much all the Bethesda / Bioware games except for Skyrim can be picked up when they're on sale for like $10 or less. And those are just the current gen games, obviously there's tons of decent RPGs throughout history that you've probably never touched.

I played Rift for a month when it first came out and it seemed to be one of the better non-WOW games on the market. Sad to hear that the end game gets dull. Looks like all these online games fall into the trap of making you grind for goodies. Thing is it takes ages to develop new content and if they make things easy to get players will get bored after sampling everything that is on offer. The only way to keep your interest is to join a friendly guild that does regular events. If you neglect the MM part of an MMO you are esentially paying a subscription fee for a single player game.

It's tough recommending a single player game without knowing your tastes, but I would suggest looking at stuff like Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Skyrim. They are RPGs so they have lots of content and you can always replay them with new characters to increase the value for money. If you like strategy RPGs the Disgaea games are also worth checking out.
