I translated NEWS' no NEWS featuring Koyama. I'm not sure what issue of Seventeen this is from, but it's before High School Musical had opened so I guess around May 2007. He talks about his view on singing, including his first time holding a mic on tv, vocal training, his [then] upcoming stage play, etc.
NEWS no NEWS vol. 6
This time, Koyama's role is of a popular basketballer, Troy. It's a story of how he meets the honor student Gabriela and learns the joy of singing. Have you always liked singing?
"It wasn't difficult, but I hated having to sing in front of everyone for music tests. It's embarrassing and I felt shy. But, karaoke is different. Since elementary school I had been going with my parents. At that time, they sang stuff they liked such as
Kome Kome CLUB's 'rouman hikou' (romance flight) (laughs). What I've been singing lately is
Kobukuro,
Ulfus,
TOKIO. Since I sing love ballads even if it's just us 2 guys, my friends say stuff like 'kimochiwarui.*' (laughs)
In my junior days, the joy I felt when I held a mic on tv was huge. I remember really well the moments the cameras were filming me while I was singing. The first time they let me hold a mic was on '
Music Station.' I sang [KinKi Kid's] '
Boku no senaka ni wa hane ga aru.' Even though the camera was right in front of me, I was too nervous and couldn't gaze into the camera. Later, as I watched the video, I thought, 'uwah~the camera is looking! what a waste!!' and reflected on it.
The voice training I'm doing for the stage play starts from the basics. I'm always listening to my teacher's recording on my portable music player, and keep repeating it for review.
'Since my range has widened with all the practice that piled up, how do I use that?' is the current result. For me, inside the car I drive is a place where I can sing in a huge voice without caring about my surroundings. But, when I'm stopped at the red light and suddenly look at the driver next to me, there have been times when they were really drawn back (laughs).
It's just one more month until the curtain opens.. I keep doing stuff like asking myself, 'How many more days until the opening day?' and checking my cell phone schedule over and over again! I've dreamed of standing on the stage many times already. In my dream, I was feeling good as I was singing, and I really shined☆. Because I want it to be like that during the real thing, once I wake up [I think] 'Ah--It was just a dream' and get a little disappointed..."
Lastly, your enthusiasm for the play please!
"When I watched this stage play in Atlanta, I laughed, and at the end I was crying. In my eyes, from one end of the stage to the other, I saw all the actors as leading characters. I felt really energetic and excited as I saw everyone singing together! I hope to do a play like [=as good as] theirs!!"
red text: "Your own car is the best place to practice"
notes:
*kimochiwarui is used in this context to call him gross/disgusting because he's only with guys and he sings romantic songs. koyama often tells stories of people calling him this after such a situation so i wanted to leave the word there.
-italicized words are used to distinguish the magazine's words, not koyama's.
