Someone Else’s Love Story 1/?
“My mom in her office?” Kyle asks, he leans slightly forward against Max’s desk, resting the bag of takeout on the edge.
Max raises an eyebrow and Kyle’s eyes dart toward where Michael is reclining back on the bunk in the open cell and then back to him.
Michael looks like he’s ignoring them, Max knows he’s not.
“She’s got the meeting with the school board tonight,” Max says. Even though Kyle knows this, and Max knows that Kyle knows this.
“Well I brought food, you hungry?” Kyle asks and Max pushes himself to his feet and waves Kyle in the direction of the small breakroom.
“You got any leftovers I want them,” Michael calls and Max ignores him, taps the door mostly closed with his foot. Just enough that Michael can’t see in from any angle of the cell.
“He okay?” Kyle asks, as he sets the bag down in the middle of the table.
“He says he is but he’s been quiet, a little more confrontational the last couple of days. Maria and Isobel are both worried about him and you know it’s like the sign of the world ending if they can agree on anything lately.”
“He probably heard Alex is coming back to Roswell.”
“He wouldn’t say anything,” Max sighs. “Also, he’s not stupid, you know. This is the third Thursday you’ve ‘forgotten’ about your moms school board thing and showed up with food,” he says as he pulls out two forks and knives from the little drawer.
When he turns back around Kyle’s already emptying the bag of it’s contents, flipping open containers. He hadn’t been hungry before, but now that he can smell fresh, warm food his stomach grumbles loudly.
“You were the one who didn’t want to tell him,” Kyle reminds him, he brushes his lips against Max’s cheek as he passes by to the small refrigerator to get waters out.
And he has a point, or at least he had a point six months ago when things started between them. Back when it was just two guys hanging out, occasionally lending each other a helping hand that then sort of evolved into actual sex. He doesn’t think either one of them expected it to go on longer than a couple of months. He’s also pretty sure that what they’re doing now is considered dating by normal people.
Kyle, Max had thought, would find someone his mom probably wouldn’t interrogate and that would be it.
“We probably should,” Max muses, “before he just starts showing up at random places we don’t want him. Should probably think about telling Isobel and your mom too.”
Kyle makes a face as he sits down across from him, twists the cap off his water and takes a long drink.
“Mom might already know,” he admits and the fry that Max is holding stops halfway to his mouth.
“I didn’t say anything, I wouldn’t unless we talked about it first, you know, like we agreed to,” Kyle says defensively. “And I don’t know if she really knows anything or if she’s just fishing. She’s just making some more pointed then usual comments about how much time we spend with each other, and the other night she left a printout on my kitchen table about some study on men finding out later in life that they were gay and she wrote on the back that it would be okay if this was the case.”
“She hasn’t said anything to me,” Max blinks and Kyle just shrugs at him.
“She totally knows,” Cameron says from the door, Max glances up and Kyle twists in his seat. “I think she’s waiting to see how long it takes for one of you to come clean about it.”
“Maybe it’s not a thing,” Michael peers around the corner, he just shoots a lazy smirk at Max when he looks between him and Jenna with narrowed eyes.
“He was going to break something trying to see into the breakroom, it was pathetic,” Jenna says, she’s not even looking at them, just filling up the electric tea kettle with water, probably so she can make some of the awful smelly tea she likes so much.
“Share half your burger with me Max,” Michael demands and Max pulls his food closer to him.
“There’s another hamburger in the bag,” Kyle says, he’s deconstructing his sandwich to pull off the onion and pickles so misses the confused narrowed eyed look that Michael shoots him.
Max just shrugs at him when Michael turns his attention in his direction, it’s the third Thursday, Kyle probably just expected Michael to be there.

“Valenti, really?” Michael asks when they leave the station at 1 am.
“I know you know he’s not the same kid we went to high school with,” Max says, even though he’s a grown ass man and doesn’t need to explain himself.
He doesn’t look over at where Michael is slouched in his seat but he knows he’s probably shooting him a look of disbelief.
“You couldn’t have chosen some other guy to…” Michael waves his hand lazily at him.
“He’s not a bad guy,” Max says and ignores Michael’s snort in response.
The thing is that Michael actually does sort of like Kyle, he won’t ever admit it and he’ll probably go to his deathbed haranguing him for shit he said and did twelve years earlier.
“What about Liz?” Michael asks, and Max shrugs.
She definitely talks to Rosa and her dad. He thinks Maria talks to her sometimes and she might even talk to Alex. He knows Kyle talks to her every couple of weeks though he never reveals what they talk about.
She hasn’t reached out to any of them, at least not that Michael or Isobel has told him. He doesn’t know what’s going to happen if she comes back, he thinks they all expect that he’ll dump Kyle and go back to her.
Six months ago he might even have said that was the likeliest outcome, now…
“He said something about Alex coming back?” Max asks, he’s not changing the subject. He’s just sure that he’s not going to say what Michael expects or wants him to.
Michael doesn’t say anything, doesn’t even make a noise, when he stops at a red light and glances over, Michael’s running a hand over his chin.
“Yeah,” he says finally, he eyes Max and then looks away though Max doesn’t miss the faint glimmer of hope in Michael’s eyes.
When Alex had left Roswell for his next assignment, Forrest in tow, Max thinks that Michael though that was it. Had a chance, blew the chance, not getting a third or fourth or whatever the hell number chance they were on.
But if Alex is coming back…
“He say anything about Forrest?” Max asks, he bites his lip as he pulls up next to Michael’s Airstream. He doesn’t want to smother that glimmer of hope, but he also doesn’t want to see Michael broken if the pair come back to town together.
“Said it was just him, he left a message, wasn’t real forthcoming on the details,” Michael says. “Sounded like he was coming back alone, kind of sounded like maybe it was him coming back for good, but…”
But they’d thought that last time. Max wonders sometimes what exactly it is that Alex does for the Air Force that meant that him being injured enough to require a prosthetic to continue being mobile didn’t mean an automatic medical retirement.

Kyle’s car is parked to the left in the driveway, right out in the open so that if anyone happens to drive past they’re definitely going to know that Kyle Valenti spent the night at Max’s Evan’s house.
Most people are going to go automatically to two guys having drank enough that Kyle didn’t feel safe driving, and Max being back working with the Sheriff wouldn’t have let him anyway.
He wonders how fast the grapevine will pick up the truth and carry it through the town.
He shoves his key in the lock and closes it behind him once he steps inside. Keys on the hook set on the wall, Kyle’s are already hanging there and Max brushes his fingers over them.
Liz used to hang her keys there and he allows himself a brief moment to wonder where she is, how she’s doing.
Whether she’s finally happy.
There’s some tiny part of him that wonders how she’ll react when she hears about them, once Michael and Isobel and the Sheriff are in the know it’s going to be literal minutes before the rest of their group will know. He’s sure that Maria or Rosa will be on the phone with her to share as soon as they know.
The bedroom is dark when he walks in, he can see the faint shape of Kyle curled up in the bed. He’s quiet as he undresses, though the faint rustling of his clothes seems to rouse Kyle.
“I’m awake,” he mutters and Max rolls his eyes and squeezes one of Kyle’s blanket covered legs before heading into the bathroom to brush his teeth and run the damp wash cloth that Kyle used over his face.
Kyle has turned in the bed when he returns to the bedroom; he’s got his arm folded under his head and he blinks slowly at him as Max slides under the blankets and curls up on his side next to him. He shifts forward the few inches separating them and kisses him gently, cupping a hand over the side of his face and running his thumb across his cheekbone.
“Go back to sleep,” he murmurs and it takes a few minutes of them staring at each other before Kyle’s eyes drift closed.
He’s not really tired, not enough to sleep quite yet, he rests his hand on Kyle’s hip, pushing his fingers under the t-shirt so they’re resting against bare skin. He can lay here and relish the quiet until he is.
*********************************************
When he wakes, he knows Kyle’s already been up and about, even though he’s still lying in bed next to him.
He knows this because he’s curled up against Kyle’s back, cheek resting on the bare skin of the shoulder he knows was covered by a t-shirt when he’d slid in beside him.
He presses his lips to sleep warm skin, tightens his arm against Kyle’s chest dragging him incrementally closer.
One of Kyle’s hands comes up to rest against his forearm, fingers stroking lightly against his skin as he shifts his hips. Max knows he can feel him hard against him through the shorts Kyle is still wearing, through the sweatpants that he’s wearing.
Kyle twists his head enough that Max can lean in and kiss him, lips parting on a groan as Max slides his hand down into those shorts and wraps a hand loosely around him. Squeezes once before he rolls just enough a way that Kyle can roll onto his back. Pushing the shorts down and away as Max pushes the sheets back while he’s pulling his sweats off.
It’s dark in the room just a hint of the sunny day peeking around the edges; when Kyle sleeps over, which has never been often enough for Max’s liking; he always remembers to pull the shades and curtains which Max almost never does.
Kyle just lays there, staring at him, one arm folded up under his head and eyebrows arched like he doesn’t care. There’s a slight curve to his lips as he stares at him and Max casts one hand blindly out for the lube while the other cups his face.
“I put it under the pillows,” Kyle says between kisses, one hand pressing against his hip, the other on his arm trying to pull Max on top of him. “Figured your overprotective siblings will be here trying to mooch breakfast and interrogate me over my intentions so if…”
