I very much compliment you over how you have accepted your situation. This must have been a very difficult process for you. Well done!!! I believe that you're making the right choices here.
There are places that you actually can ring a bell for help. My mom received a lot of help from the institute that she recovered in (Heliomare in Wijk aan Zee). I might be able to dig up some info for you, if you want.
Facing it my be a little scary but it's just the way it goes and you have to try to do everything you can to make your life a little better. Getting a wheelchair may seem a depressing thing because it's accepting the fact that you can't walk properly but it will provide you some freedom and independency, apart from security, of course. So you may as well just get on with it and you'll end up being a bit happier with everything. Just try to make your life a little easier, even if it's hard it'll feel better once you get used to it.
