Does anyone know how to delete tags that are empty and won't be used?

I decided to clean up the tags in my journal sooner rather than later, and I also decided to give myself some set rules about tagging posts.   It doesn't make sense to have two posts about "John Sheppard," and one's tagged "Sheppard" while the other is tagged "John." I did my

I find doing cleaning up tags really difficult...I used to think it was fun having a lot of tags, but now I want to cut a lot of them out and it is so confusing, wish lj had a simpler way of doing it.

Had I known it would be this messy, I would have made set rules for tagging in the beginning. The upside is my journal's not that old, so it's not so bad. I still haven't found anything to get rid of the unused ones.
