I have a modded Xbox that I use as a media PC - it's running Linux, and it does the job exceptionally well. There's all kinds of networking options, and it's very tweakable - although, it has to be said, a little difficult to initially set up

Investigating and yes, it looks like the poxy Windows Media Center file-sharing assumes that you're on the same IP range. Bollocks. I can think of several solutions, but they all look like they're going to cost monies.

I may do some jiggery pokery with the router and see if I can convince everything to work properly, but on the other hand - everything else works fine. Mmmmm. May just go with option 3, which is buy a cheap wireless interface for the file server. I may even have one lying around somewhere - I know I bought one awhile back.
